Just wondering how people on NS feel about gothic people??? A pretty simple question.

It's not a question of how. I try my best not to feel them. Ever.

Quite gloomy.

They're just.. People. If that's the way they want to look, then fine. Admittedly I find them a bit intimidating, but they have the right to dress as they want and that's fine by me.

There were a couple of anti-gothic threads (perhaps started by various incarnations of the same poster) for whatever reason, so there's a bit of anti-gothism here, though I'm not quite sure why.

Who are these Gothic people? Are they from Goth? There are some American youths who dress up in dark clothes and piece their bodies. I thought it was a fashion statement. Is there some deeper cultural concept there?

Goths suck but The Cure is cool.

I have to say that I don't find it pleasent to be around them. Some are okay, but most aren't.

I've been threatened in broad daylight by eight of them in the town centre (probably drunk) and they cause a small amount of civil disturbance but not much.

I just don't like them much.

The chicks look hot, the guys like morons, most are wussies and they are so not fun its unbearable. While a facet of my music taste borders on gothic sometimes (EBM, Industrial), i like unnerving them by simply amusing myself. I even have a hawaii shirt reserved for attending gothic gatherings. :D Most seem to have self-esteem problems and react even more angsty with a skinhead (no, not nazi for those who usually equal them :rolleyes: ) around them who does not hide his masculinity behind tons of makeup.

i used to wear makeup and backcomb my hair and stuff when i was young, and even when i stopped doing that i still wore the black clothes for a while. but being miserable on purpose, and obsessed with spiders and vampires, that's a bit of a waste of your life. long live the hawaiian shirted skinhead.

I used to think they were tryhards, then I saw one with the whole make up bit and...a Linkin Park T-Shirt so now I can say I KNOW they are tryhards. Not to mention they kinda don't know what the original Gothics were like...

But to sum it up, I hate them pure and simple, they make the streets look dirty, should deport them from Australia to...anywhere else

I think "eh." It's a bit sad though. They try and rebel against mainstream society, but do so by conforming to a stereotype.

Seriously though it is their clothing choice … most of my best friends have been (and in the rare instance still are) goth … I never got into it … though I do wear mostly black I still don’t do any of the hair stuff or black pants or anything.

You know what could fix the problem...Compulsory service in the Military. I mean I support this to fix the dole problem; it could fix the Goth problem tooDoesn't work. We've got conscription, and just as many goth(-wannabes) as any other well-off nation. The only kinds of problems compulsory military service is good for solving are those caused by having too many 18-25-year-old males loose in the society, and in the long run any adult males, because of the increased suicide and accidental death rates.

I don't mind goths colthing and the fact that they where black or wear makeup its the whole thing that they think there some sort of vampire or satan..they take it too far IMO!! I mean look at Ozzy, he' s a goth of a sort and look at him now?? Confused between satan and God!! Goths are ... funny people. Okay, I'm just echoing here. I actually think the men are a disgrace to the Y-chromosome, the women are hot and sexually open, their whole sub-culture is pretentious these days and I really like Nine Inch Nails.

I used to be friendly with a crowd of Goths; I wasn't one myself, but I respected their choice of clothing/music/etc and they seemed grateful of the fact I wasn't judging them, like many people unfortunately do. I can honestly say that some of these people were among the most friendly and fun people I've ever known. The 'miserable all the time' thing is just a stereotype - admittedly, stereotypes usually have a basis in truth, but definitely not in this case. I've lost touch with these people now (they were friends of a former friend), which is a shame. Just because you don't like how they dress or share their musical tastes doesn't mean their bad people. It would be a very dull world if we were all the same!

The majority of Goths I have met are fine, but some are snobbish and think because they use big words/dress in black/pretend to commit suicide on online forums they are better and more intelligent than you.

Particularly the ones who are not naturally tall, thin and pale. It must be hard work being a goth. You can never just go out without making an effort.

It isn't a minority issue, the fact is many of them are nothing but dole cheats. If they don't work they should be deported and not draining the funds that should be going to schools and hospitals. I don't want to be paying some slacker hard earned money so he can sit at home doing his makeup. Sorry but I would prefer to pay to put more Churches, Hospitals, and Schools up...

This would make virtually everybody I know a goth, and I don't know any goths.

I'm not exactly sure. I think I originally got it from a friend who sent it to me via email. I think HE got it from some forums he was a part of. I did some research and I heard from the start that it was given out to a congregation as part of the leaflets given out every Sunday. I was told by someone that a friend of hers was given the original leaflet and she came from Texas. But I can't say that's a very credible source although I know the deep south has a reputation worldwide for producing extremist christians. So if anyone can help, that would be great :P

I'm not sure. I consider two groups when talking about goths: 'Fake Goths' and 'Real Goths'... The fake goths being the majority of the 14 year olds who dress in black and say they love bands like HIM and Nightwish. The real goths seem to know why they dress in black and act the way they do. The fake goths just do those things because they want to be known as goths. So go figure :P I don't really like fake goths at all unless there non-goth aspects are great. Real goths... well, I'm usually too scared to talk to them in case they start quoting Dante or something :P

Which is odd, because most of the goths I have known (and I have known thousands, from all over the world) have been regular 'working-week' type individuals... with proper jobs (often, well-paying jobs... especially in computers, for some reason).

I think you are confusing slackers (in general) with one specific minority of culture (the goth).

What is more, I think you are doing it deliberately.

Like any culture, or sub-culture, "goth" attracts 'wannabees'.

The problem is, too many people assume that a goth-wannabee is the definition of a "goth"...and, usually... people just don't put the effort into finding out if their stereotypes are true, once they decide on them.

Goths are fine. I know one current goth and one person who was a Goth, they are both really nice people. I suspect that the reason most people don't like them is because they are intimidated by someone who is different to them with somewhat radical ideas.

yeah i was thinkin of "real goths" but you're right - there is so much subdivision of the genre. I mean, on similar lines, you could have metalheads, niblets, punks and loooads more thrown in to this general category; most of them 'wear black clothes' etc... as per the list ;)
metalheads (like me :D ) are best to hang around with - like goths but more fun and less sullen :p

Three - some Wiccans are goths. Some goths are Wiccans. Neither has any intrinsic connection to the other, or to Satanism.

Four - According to this list, if you don't pray regularly (so - if you aren't a christian, for example), you are a member of this 'bad crowd'.

In a peculiar twist of synchonicity... I am currently listening to "Rattamahatta".

Well, the Goths did do a fair bit of looting and pillaging, and that's bad, but that was a long time ago. Lately they mostly seem to be occupying themselves by contemplating the dark and by writing poems in black ink on black construction paper, so . . . I don't care.

Seriously though it is their clothing choice … most of my best friends have been (and in the rare instance still are) goth … I never got into it … though I do wear mostly black I still don’t do any of the hair stuff or black pants or anything.

Anyways whatever they wish to wear is cool with me I like dark clothes, metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, and Norse stuff in general. Do I qualify? I mean, I don't do the make-up or the white skin thing. I am most definitely not a Satanist (quite the opposite, actually…), but I have this interest in any kind of horrible creature/daemon, especially the thing from Alien.

My friend is a sort of Goth - same as me but is a vampire.

I was classified as "goth" for quite a while...it just so happened that nobody in my area had decided that "hey, not everyone who hates sunlight and loves black is a goth!"...most of us were like that. We liked black t-shirts with smartass remarks written on them, and we didn't care for sunlight (when you're out all night drinking or up all night programming, it kind of hurts, you know..)

Finally, they came up with a new name for us by the time I got out of highschool -- losers. lovely, isn't it?

Not all goths are depressed. There are only two goths I know that are depressed. The others are happy as pie. Most of us wont hurt a fly. Yes, we may look scary, but at heart were not. The more extreame goths are annoying. Just walk by, ignore them.....

All "gothic" music sucks. I listen to music that actually takes talent to play, not this industrial "gothic" whatever. 99% of the "Goths" that I've seen all listen to either nu-metal or some kind of watered-down industrial crap.

Which is odd, because most of the goths I have known (and I have known thousands, from all over the world) have been regular 'working-week' type individuals... with proper jobs (often, well-paying jobs... especially in computers, for some reason).

I think you are confusing slackers (in general) with one specific minority of culture (the goth).
