According to CNN last night, New Jersey, the most densely populated US state, home to a major international airport, oil refieneries that process much of the fuel used in the North Eastern US, and many of the nation's pharmaceutical and financial corporations will lose 35% of it's homeland defense funding in FY 2005. Meanwhile places like Wyoming and Nebraska are still going to get homeland defense money. Something aint right here.

Everyone hates New Jersey. It is the France of North America. I'm glad it is losing its funding.

New Jersey is the greatest state in the US. We are richer than most, maintain pretty good environmental standards despite our industry and high population density, and more people want to live here than we can accomodate. Why do you think such a small state has a higher population than some big states like Montana?
BTW we are NOT like france. Our National Guard is helping out in Iraq. New Jersey's men actually fight.

While I think it's ALL a colossal waste of money, I ask myself - doesn't it make more sense to have the highest funding go to coastal/border states rather than states that are landlocked/sharing no international borders?

That is, unless of course, the real intent is to shore up defenses for 'Heartland' states...against who, though? Other states?

Maybe there IS something fishy going on...

New Jersey is nothing more than a bland suburb of Philadelphia and New York City.

Sure it was cool back in the days of Gen. Washington, but now? The answer is a definitive no. Garden State? More like toolbooth state. And I ask you, when did you last see a garden that grew fifty story smokestacks?

As I said, the worst place in North America. Which is why most people choose to live on the other side of the Hudson, even though it costs a hell of a lot more.

While I haven't stopped to savour the local flavour, I did pass through New Jersey (in a car, on my way to NYC) on a few occasions. My first trip through was in 1981. I merely 'made note of' the burdgeoning sprawl and smokestacks.

The last time I went via the same route (approx. 5 years ago), the sprawl had seemingly tripled or even quadrupled. It was saddening, as I've seen the same type of sprawl around the ever-broadening edges of my home city, too.

Sometimes the only way that it (sprawl) really impacts upon you is to see it only once in a while. Seeing it to and from work every day tends to minimize it.

Actually, the NJ pine barrens are a larger tract of wilderness than yosemite. NJ has lots of protected agricultural land and state forests. Yeah, we have cities and suburbs too. As for most people choosing to live on the other side of the Hudson, you might be shocked to know that New Yorkers are buying up homes in NJ as fast as they can be built.

Holmdel, and points south, are nice. Long Beach Island is nice. Northern New Jersey should be ceded to New York State.

Newark, on the other hand, is a hell hole. I'm not sure anyone would want it.

Ever been to Stokes state forest in the north? It's spectacular up there.

So, some States are worth more than others... and perhaps some should not be defended at all.

One could make the case that some states are worth more than others. Some criteria could be population, military value (coastal stations are better suited to naval bases than landlocked ones for obvious reasons), and contributions to the economy. Some states DON'T need to get much in the way of homeland defense funding. What self-respecting terrorist is going to attack Idaho?

Erm.... Timothy McVeigh?

My point is that a certain someone wants a certain state undefended... because he dislikes that particular state.

If we were to say that some states are worth more than others, I would say that New Jersey is at the top of the list. How much money do you think Alabama gets from New Jersey taxpayers every year?
