Just saw a History Channel ad for a series about the French Revolution. They stressed that, "Now, for two hours, it won't kill you to love the French!" Heh!

You know that the French Revolution was the result of pent-up anti-Americanism released soon after the King of France decided to help the United States, right?
You know, I was under the impression that a peasantry mired in poverty rose up against an oppressive aristocracy...

They should do one on the American revolution as well, since French people and Americans have so much in common; they are hated and they both had a revolution.

your partly right but it was more to do with the great fear and the enlightenment then anything else.
Reed Townson's "FRANCE IN REVOLUTION" to find out more.

as for this point, it is completely false. They gave the US freedom and then had a revolution to become more like the USA.
There would be no USA if it weren’t for the French
:D:D

You're wrong. It's actually the bourgeoisie who is at the origin of the french revolution. The Revolution is the triumph of the middle class, to make it simple.

The thing is, it is quite hard to find what caused the Revolution (as in the straw that broke the camels back, there were plenty of straws).
The biggest influence that the American war of independence had on France was that it bankrupted the country which some see as a major cause of the Revolution (gotta love historical irony).

Don't be so sure. As I said before, it is hard to determine what actually caused the revolution. And historians acting partisan has not helped.
Needless to say, I think Paxania is being a bit simplistic.

Both classes rose, the middle couldn't do it one their own but ultimately the middle benfitted more from it as they were able to control it to a greater extent - as in the English Revolution or Civil War as we are told to call it.

Sorry, yes, I was at crossed points. I thought you were talking about something else.

That's just kinda sad and pathetic that they have to use that by-line to try to encourage Americans to watch an educational programme about a culture and country with an incredibly long and interesting history. :(

Could you explain what that means?

Yeah, bloody Sweden with their bloody IKEA and Nordic Blondes and saunas and stuff. They gave us ABBA, didn't they? Good enough reason to hate them.
I've never much liked the Finns, cause I once had a horrendous hangover from drinking some Finnish Vodka.

This thread is degenerating way too fast. Is it really necessary to be obnoxious about everything?
