The person who wrote the article didn't even seem to be trying to play up the 'OMG IT'S A FREAK' angle... they included more than a few references to how upset the parents were about other people's attitudes, and how much they still cared about her... the medical facts were cold and not overly descriptive... that kid was made to look like a jerk (the little girl who called the first girl 'disgusting')... the article managed to walk the thin line between 'information' and 'schadenfreude' quite well, I think.

Its the fact that it would make some say "Ewww" that ought to make you have some sort of compassion for the fact that these things exist. I am sure there are worse out there. But this seemed a particularly egregrious case. Its the disgusting factor that directs our attention to the problems of others and makes us want to help them. Maybe you are more upset that i have offended your sensibilities by posting it. Some one posted that the media invaded the family's privacy. But it seems to me that the family sought the publicity.

The only philosopher I know of who went into GREAT depths of this was Hobbes, and he was a bit pessimistic. To shorten things a lot, in the state of nature, all human creatures are egotistical, will take whatever they want (others be damned), and will have nor morals whatsoever. This is because morals are linked directly to laws-wihch are a part of the artificial society. You see, all human beings are equal in one thing-they can all kill one another. However, people can band together and form societies with the goal of eliminating the state of nature as much as possible, to ensure a...shall we say, a lack of killing. In this society, laws are made, but only for two purpose-to control people, and to gain money.

It is through these laws that people find their morals. What are crimes so bad? Because they're illegal. However, if this was the case, why do people disagree with laws? Because of the state of nature-this law would be controlling a part of them that wishes not to be controlled.

Therefore, abortion is very much a part of nature, since in the state of nature all thigns are, in a sense, completely equal. If the fetus is killed, then it's tough luck.

What I'm expecting is that they'll respect people's privacy.Who? The media? Their job, unfortunately seems to be to invade peoples privacy with the most sensational images being the most sought after. Does anyone remember the footage of the young boy being caught in a crossfire and then shot in front of his father as they tried to shelter behind part of a wall?
