Is Iraq better off with Saddam gone?

Even the new President thinks the US has done a terrible job. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4090963.stm)

Regardless of the current situation, I would think that Iraq would eventually get better than earlier circumstances under Saddam.

Not that it necessarily justifies military invasion, but on the simple question: "Is Iraq better off without Saddam" I must say yes.

Iraq is better without Saddam. However, I also think that it would be better without the US army.

remember how Howard Dean got so much flack for being unconvinced that Saddam's removal was going to improve life for the Iraqis? i think some people owe him an apology...

Well, taking a quick look at the chaos that Iraq is engulfed in, I would have to say no, its not.

Yes

No not really. Well, there's no more people disappearing in the night from Saddam's death sqauds. Instead they just die in the middle of the road from bombs.

Yes

No, they are not better. They just have a new opressive ruler. And convicts are treated the same way (remember the prison scandels).

*side note*
A friend of mine's father is a general who visited Iraq for a health conferance. He told me that when they leave the airport in army trucks, they drive down the roads as fast as they can go, not caring who are what is in their way. Its not uncommon for Iraqis crossing the street to be plowed under by US army trucks.

I don't think much has changed. Things are probobly worse there, based on what indy sources are saying. I don't believe the mainstream stuff.

Saddam deserves to die and its good his sons were killed but I think the average Iraqi is worse off today

In my opinion, no one ever deserves to die.

I said nearly the same thing in the other thread on the one year anniversary of Saddam's capture. Howard Dean was right.

Are the Iraqis better off? Not right now, and there's no guarantee that Allawi or some other strongman won't turn into another Hussein when we eventually leave.

theres good reason to believe that Allawi is a Saddam part 2 which may be one of the reasons why Bush supports him--its not about democracy its about Bush changing puppets cause the other puppet broke its strings

Come now, Incertonia. It must kill Eutrusca to know that not only was Dean right, but France as well.

HIJACK!! - My aunt's dentist is called Mr Allawi. According to him, he's the cousin of Dr. Iyad Allawi.

Oh, and Iraq is no better or worse one year on. Just a different group of people controlling the killing now.

Of course there's a difference! The Mission has been Accomplished! Afghanistan benefited, some how! Not only are our own people safer, but the Americans are safer too! Oil prices are at a new low! There's healthy democracy in Iraq, and guess what- it's a role model for the rest of the heathens! Our people are safe from the gay menace! Due to Iraq, everyone can now own their own gun! And uh... yeah.... Oh, and if you disagree- we'll call YOU unpatriotic!
That, essentially, is how listening to George Bush makes you feel. Bloody whitewashers...

Does anyone know what the Iraqi's think about their situation now compared to a year ago?

In the two most recent polls, which weren't really that recent, I don't think that question was asked. The closest was what they think their situation will be like in a year from now, in which a solid 60% continue to say better.

Iyad Allawi brags about shooting 6 people to death in cold blood in his office once--does this sound like a civilized leader? Allawi is also not the peoples choice he hasnt lived in Iraq for years-hes the puppetmasters choice

The Democrats really do need a liberal candidate. The only problem is that would make them a non-politician. Those are very easy to beat- just show a picture of them in their spare time, oh, I don't know... windsurfing... maybe skate boarding... and use it to call them a pinko freak thrill seeker commie, and you've got the election in a bag.

You would think so, but I imagine Eutrusca, like Joe Lieberman, lives in his own little spider-hole of denial where everything Bush says is good and everything Howard Dean says is bad.

Yes, Iraq is in much better off without Hussien and his children.
