George is a dictator. You can't question/say anything against him, or you're faced with economic or political repercussions. Reporters are forbidden to ask him questions, unless the questions are pre-approved. He ignores impromptu questions from anyone, even from his own party, if there's a camera or reporter around.
This is the same for his entire administration. Since everytime they get hit by an unexpected question, they fuck up pretty bad. Just look at the soldier town hall meeting with Rumsfeld a couple days ago.

Hmmmm I don't like him, I don't think he's a very good president, but I think he's alot better than most people paint him out to be.
My major issues with him is the way he deals with leaders of foreign countries, while I do approve of the war on Iraq, I think the way he basically blew off all the other countries that didn't join up was very bad... also he isn't a very good public speaker, which is important for a president.
With that said though, I think he handled 9/11 fairly well, at least by comparison to how I think Gore or Kerry would have done. He's better than any of the other choices, so therefore my support goes to him.
Basically picking between bad and worse, I chose bad, which is Bush.

Kerry WAS a bigger dumbass because he didn't call out Bush on any of the subjects that could have won him the election. But I don't think Kerry really wanted to win this election. No conspiracy going on here. I just know I wouldn't want to take over the job when Bush did such a Bang-up job in his first four years.
None of this makes Bush any less of a dumbass for the rest of us.
And remember, right or wrong, plenty of people don't vote. So it wasn't 51% percent of ALL Americans that voted for Bush, just a whole bunch of dumbasses. And lots of them only voted for him because he was the Republican candidate and/or wasn't John Kerry.
