6 Court-Martialed for Scrounging Equipment
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/nation/10401608.htm
Does this really make sense to anyone? Maybe an administrative reprimand for covering it up, but 6 months and a dishonourable discharge, my f'ing god what is the military thinking.

They don't want liars in the military. That's what politics is for. :p

you're not to lie in the military unless ordered to by your commanding officer. you're not to scrounge equipment unless it comes off of old soviet military equipment in the iraqi dessert unless you fill out all the forms in triplicate. And never forget, turning junk belonging to the miltary into useful equipment for the military is theft and you will be punished to the full extent of the law.

I don't think it was the scrounging of the trucks that got them blasted. I think it was not telling anybody and destroying the evidence.

yeah that's very possible, but its always a tough call, when you need to get sh1t down right now and you know you are in a grey area. it just seems that administrative punishment would have been more appropriate considering all the other questionable stuff going on over there. what does it tell the troops and the world about the mentality of the US military when these are the soldiers the army has no problem sending to jail and booting out.

I'll agree with that. Seems a bit of a steep punishment. But I would need to know more to really form an opinion about that.

he should receieve no punishment at all--the only person who should be punished is Rumsfeld for sending soldiers to Iraq without the proper gear

heck, ya wait to you know all the facts and its just history, i just take my best guess based on my ideological predisposition like most people(only difference is i both realize and admit it).

I suspect the crux of the matter is described in this paragraph:
"Instead of taking the trucks back to their rightful owners, the first thing was erasing the identity marks and dumping them off at bases," Wicker said. "They destroyed it. They did the enemy's job. ... Those trucks could be used for other units."

Groucho Marx - "military justive is to justice what military music is to music"
only in the military and AMERICAN military would shit like this happen. if they start a draft, ill just go to jail ahead of time and circumvent a few years of doing bullshit that will get me killed then getting sent to jail for following orders

 And this is the best part:
With his approval, doctors severed his finger, but somehow in the chaos that followed, they lost his ring.

Yep. That seems to be what the commandeer says at the end of the article.
(And that really was a typo. But it is just too funny to correct! :D)

Hey now, those babies might be hidding the missing WMD in their cribs! Make 'em talk!
Seriously though, what the hell is going on in the heads of our military commanders these days? Return the vehicles to units that have already moved on to Iraq? WTF!!! I thought that scrounging material when it wasn't be provided by the higher-ups was a time honored part of fighting a war? Is the guy who admited they were going through garbage piles to get scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmor their vehicles next? :headbang:

They appear to be thinking soldiers committed to doing their job. Of course these are unwelcome additions to an army tasked with sitting in a desert getting shot at. What are really required are soldiers that can sit down on command.
The present military isn't the military anymore, and the present administration, which perpetuated this kind of crap, is getting worse and worse..... In my day they would have been given Unit Commendations.
