Me and the damn music threads.

Simple. What's your favourite band (if you had to choose one above all).

I'm going to pick, ah...umm...Queens of the Stone Age.

EDIT- Might help if you post the genre too, so i'll know first hand whether i'll like it enough to check them out :)
Los Banditos

I've heard of them and they are indeed brilliant.

At the moment, my favourite band is the Zutons, another band that most of you have probably never heard of.

That's only because they tune the instruments in all of their songs in a certain way, they end up having a similar feel. Compare Mexicola to Better Living Through Chemistry and God Is On The Radio. They're each from different albums and each a different sound. QOTSA make brilliant albums, not brilliant singles, i'll admit. Much like their precursor Kyuss, which i think needs to be heard in order to fully appreciate QOTSA. (I rate Kyuss about the same as them, technically they're half the same band :p)

Lacuna Coil are the band that should be famous and not Evanescence.

As for Seether- I heard one track of theirs, "Gasoline" in a pre-production stage. It was awesome. But then they went and spoilt it with shitty (cant describe it any other way) distortion and that is an album where everything sounds the same. My brother likes it.

im sure it had some kind of effect on him.
nirvana was one of the first grundge bands
to make it big.

And the Foo's were one of the leading post-grunge bands so theres an obvious connection.

It's just that I prefer the style of Nirvana- it's usually less poppy. Not to down the Foo's of course. It's just not my thing as much as Nirvana.

If you like The Shins, you should really like Rogue Wave also. They are very similar and are also on Sub Pop.

That is their website, they stream music from their most recent album while you are there. Its good stuff.

Right now, I would say my favorite bands would be Beulah, the Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine(also Sub Pop) , and the aforementioned Rogue Wave.

Favorite of all time changes often, too, depending on my mood. I will go with Beck on this particular instance.

I like these threads because I get introduced to new music that I might never hear otherwise.

I checked out some that were mentioned at the beginning of this thread:

Brand New -These guys didn't impress me. I would wager that the only difference between these guys and the million emo bands that didn't make it would be a semi-attractive lead singer who has hair perfectly feathered and parted as to partially obscure his left eye. But I will never be sure, as I am not going to look up their webpage, which I am sure has a moody flash intro and is loaded with lots of grainy, black and white pictures where you can't really make out the band anyway. If I'm wrong, oh well, I still don't like these guys.

Eisley - Sound like Alanis Morissette singing for the Goo Goo Dolls, somewhat appealing, very boring, in other words perfect for radio. I don't know why this band has not blown up yet. I'm sure their label is expecting them to. I unfortunately listened to The Zutons before this band and I only listened to half of one of their songs before going back to The Zutons, so if my comments don't apply, I'm sorry, first impressions are a bitch.

The Zutons - Eureka, a diamond in the rough. Very interesting songs, lots of melody, catchy singing. I like it. I have heard pressure point before, so they weren't completely foreign to me. Dirty Dancehall is responsible for my inattention towards Eisley, and I will probably listen to it and Not A Lot To Do several times tonight.

I wouldn't call them emo. I like to think of them as indie. It explains why they are not as popular as well. Some of their songs sound whiny but most of their lyrics make fun of the genre and how it is overdone. The name of their new album translates to "heard before." And in the song "Okay, I Believe You but My Tommy Gun Don't" they basically just throw out a lot of cliches from the genre. They have a sense of humor and don't take themselves to seriously. If I wouldn't have actually been at their concert, I never would have like them.

Oh, and I got reminded of a quote in my school newspaper. "If emo means emotional, does that mean that John Mayer is emo?"

I will admit that all of the songs I that I had based my opinion on came from a previous album, Your Favorite Weapon. They were decidedly crappy emo, that Jude Law song is bad.

I did download some off the new album, and I have to say they are venturing into the indie classification, but I still hear a lot of emo. If they continue to mature at this rate, I'd say they are an album away from At The Drive In. Unless they detour into AFI territory. I predict the latter.

Yeah, I try to stay away from their first album. The only song I like is "Failure by Design." It is a filler song about not wanting to make filler songs.

oooh! music...I must chime in about my favorites...actually its a tie for first!

The Living End: Amazingly talented punkabilly trio from Melbourne, Australia. They absolutely show up whoever they open for here in America every time. I have yet to meet a person who has seen them live who hasn't become a fan. Definitely my first musical love.

Muse: I went from casual fan to absolutely in love with them after one live performance! An aptly named band because the inspiration behind their music is beyond overdrive. Just wonderful symphonic alt rock urgency! Everyone focuses on Matt Bellamy in this group, but Chris Wolstenholme may be one of the best bassists alive, and has a good voice himself. I even have a tongue in cheek puppet nation called Obsessed Muse Groupies on NationStates.

Malice Mizer: I must say this Japanese quintet is probably an acquired taste. Imagine Muse, subtract some of the hard rock edge and add some gothiness, theatricity, and much more beauty. Most of their music is in Japanese and I don't speak it, but still its just great. This band during the Gackt era may have been quite possibly the most versatile band I ever heard. That era is also when they seemed like a band when Gackt was the singer compared to the Tetsu and Klaha era when Mana was clearly running the show, although the Klaha era isn't that bad.

Analogy time kids:
Mana is to Malice Mizer as Billy Corgan is to The Smashing Pumpkins..(creative controlwise anyway)

Favorite Videos:
Illuminati by Malice Mizer (WAY too hot for American TV!)
Just by Radiohead (Brilliant)

Currently in CD Player:
Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand (An amazingly tight group, great songwriters)
Kick Up the Fire and Let the Flames Break Loose by The Cooper Temple Clause (an amazingly talented sextet, combines the hard and the soft very skillfully)
Computerwelt by Kraftwerk (Electronica, New Wave, etc wouldn't exist if it weren't for them)
