Tribes had a long history as the best first person shooter, in my opinion, though it has recently been bumped off by Half Life 2 which is simply a stunning game. With that said, I still think Tribes is the most entertaining multiplayer shooter out there because of the far greater emphasis on tactical movement over simple aim, along with the slow traveling projectiles, which makes it an actually challenging game rather than a simple point a shoot like most other first person shooters on the market.

I played the demo version, back when. Can't say I was great, but I liked it.
