On that stupid window that always pops up when I sign on to AIM it mentioned something about a trailer for H.G. Wells's "War of the Worlds", apparently debuting in summer of '05.

Gah, it starts TOM CRUISE!! Will this movie bomb?

Hollywood is teh suck - I remember listening to a recording of a 'War of the Worlds' broadcast a good few years ago; I think it was what made me interested in all the later sci-fi's I like/d

The good news? A movie about a good book is being made.

The bad news? It stars Tom Cruise.

Oh, Fuckberries.

Wasn't "Independence Day" just a new version of "War of the Worlds"? Don't know why you guys are complaining. It can't be worse than that...

WTF? Does "They're already here" mean what I think it means.

Hears a list of some of the cast and crew:

Starring: Tom Cruise, Miranda Otto, Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins, James DuMont
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

The only way to do a tribute to War of the Worlds is to do a radio and TV story scare.

It's no surprise they've already goofy-fied it.

You should see what they're doing with the Doom movie.

Based on a game with demons, Mars, and the military, it's now going to be viruses, the Moon, and ... get this... S.W.A.T. teams.

Figure THAT one out.

yeah, I heard about that...complete bullshit. Apparently demons and Hell are too touchy for the current social climate. So now we get another lame Resident Evil clone.

And they couldn't even do it on MARS?!??!

Haven't I already talked to you about being afraid of this bogeyman called "Hollywood"? You really need to let it go.

First, not every movie made is 'Hollywood.' It's where the studio center is, but that doesn't mean that everything comes from there.

Second, not every movie, including movies that come from that dreaded place called "Hollywood" are bad. You've liked movies. C'mon, admit it.....(the only reason people tend to think that foriegn movies are great is because we're only getting thier good ones. Here we get the good mixed in with all the Dude, Where's my Car?s....)

You have to look at the track record of the people involved and decide from there. Speilberg has been responsable for some good movies. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Tom Cruise isn't even a sure fire negative. You all need to stop with this, really. It has every chance in the world of begin pretty good. Sure, it also could suck ass, but c'mon-you think it's going to be worse than the first time they made it as a movie?

Trying to do Orson Welles' version-too many venues of information to do what was done in 1938. The closest that has been done in modern times is The Blair Witch Project with it's internet rumour mill that managed to insinuate that the movie itself was real. Can't replicate what happened in '38 now unless EVERYONE played along. Not going to happen.

I just wonder how they'll do it... will it be set in London like the original or the US like the classic Movie?
and what Time period?
The tagline suggests that it might be actually a Part 2.

If you add the text story printed in Doom's manual, then you get a film where you don't know the main character, (So you won't care if he lives or dies), weak plot, (unless you actually show how the portal is opened and everyone dying, then you'll have no empathy for the poor sapsuckers. and with only one marine running around in the bowels of Hell, you get no interaction... a piss-poor movie.

Me, I'd wait to see what they do and give the changes they make a chance. who knows, it just might work.

If you read the Doom books, you would realize that there is a whole lot to the Mars story, it could work, I'm guessing not. I also heard talks of getting Ridley Scott to do a Halo movie. A decent video game movie perhaps? (crosses fingers)

The trailer looked like it showed lots of locations, but the town that looked to be the 'effected' area looked pretty middle america. Though I was waiting for tells that they would be 'throwing back' to other interpritations, like a Grover's Mill sign or something, but I didn't see any.

(crosses fingers)The books are another adaptation of the game. and there were changes in that as well. like more marines and scientists. not the lone figure to stem the tide game mechanincs... which I know won't work in a movie.

1) Mortal Kombat (Original, not the second, obviously). It was a tad campy, but it was an enjoyable film. Resident Evil was enjoyable as well.

2) They should just do what they did with the other decent game-to-movie conversions: Instead of focusing on one person, focus on a small group. In MK, you're usually just one person. In Resident Evil, it varies, but I think the max was, what, three people, and rarely at the same time? Doom with a small group of MARINES fighting DEMONS on MARS would be just fine. If nothing else, I'd love a chance to be applauding the US military. Heck... if they even have.. good military... with no evil guys.. except spies... I would just loooove to, for two hours, forget my issues with the real US military, and say "Go USA!" like I did in the 90s.

Another Game to movie coming out is BLOODRAYNE. That also looks interesting... and campy.

I also liked the resi movies and Mortal Kombat 1 (didnt bother seeing 2) so take my opinion for what little its worth.

I'd say if they make a Doom movie they most likely won't make it for people who have played allt he games and read all the books. I haven't read all that and I'd guess its some heavy getting into, and would be very expensive and most importantly it wouldn't be a good draw for people who have NOT played the games, read the books and played 150+ hours of these kinda games.

Even if war of the worlds aint a great movie its not the end of the world... we've still got the magic of Xmas.. right?

Doom 1: moon base then Hell
Doom 2: earth?
Where is doom 3 set?Now that you mention it... The First Doom was an experiment on the Moon that opened the rift. That one ends with you on Earth and the world is in shambles.

Doom 2 the first mission was to close the rift so that the last humans could escape the planet. you close it but you jump inside to defeat the big bad demon.

Didn't pick up Doom 3... :(
