The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12 -- "Preserve the sanctity of marriage."

Now, seriously, does anybody want to restrict marriage to same-sex couples? Is that a good idea? Is that the way that you would want to be treated?

But it's only The Golden Rule. It doesn't sound very important, anyway. It's certainly not worth remembering.

And sorry about the misquote.

While i though the golden rule was "Do unto other as they shall do upon you" I also think its against basic civil rights to deny marriage to a couple on teh basis of sexual orientation.

Well what about man/animal marriages? Clearly females could get more satisfaction from some animals in the sexual way for they've got bigger umm things and on the other hand men would be getting as much as they want with out any nagging..

Well I guess people dont understand the difference between two consenting adults who want to spend the rest of their life together and some person who wants to have sex with an animal. The animal can't really consent to marriage, and even if it could, the law would not recognise an animals consent.

Man/animal marriages also defy The Golden Rule. No case can be made that the animal would want to be treated that way.

Theres always the arguement that if an animal didnt want to have sex, it wouldn't. Most animals could kill or maim you if you were doing something they didn't agree to.

Ok, lets take a quick biology lesson here. Two men marrying each other, they are both of the same species. A man and a dog marrying each other, they exist only in the same phylum. (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, order, family genus, species)

Even mentioning marriage between man and animal is a stupid, ignorant argument to make when you are talking about gay marriage.

Which I suppose there are few cases of Man/Tiger relationships.

Come on, the slippery slope is about as fun as opinion as fact

(I think I can remember someone on this board once decending to the level of saying he should be able to marry his table)

Stop the divorce then we'll talk. It is, after all, against the golde rule...

Quoting a friend from another board:
The "sanctity of marriage" argument was lost years ago.

When common-law was introduced, we gave up any claim to that argument. I'd think the religious community would have considered common law far worse than same-sex marriage. At least they *want* to be married - common law people were living in sin, and now the government makes them married without their consent. :/

Does that mean you automatically consent to marry for life the next person (or other thing) that gets you horny?

Logically, yes. No rational person would argue otherwise.

I think marriage has two sides, marriage for God, and for the state. In marriage for the state all humans are equal, (male/female) and therefore the gender of two persons wanting to marry eachother should not matter. Marriage for God, however, is a different case and I think preachers and stuff should decide for themselves (or let the Vatican decide, whatever they want) whether they would marry two men. Animals are in law not equal to humans and should therefore not be allowed to marry men (or women, ofcourse)
