What are your greatest fears?

The Imperial Navy
09-12-2004, 15:16
I am searching for your greatest of all fears. I want to know what makes you have nightmares, what your phobias are, and what you do to overcome them. I shall go first.

Phobias: Fear of sharp objects, fear of hot items.

Greatest fear: That I will die in great pain.

How I overcome my fears: I haven't been able to.

Next.

Phobia - Needles :(

Greatest Fear - An attack I can't defend from. If someone's gonna try to kill / injure me, they can do it like a man dammit.

Solution - Still considering that...

I have a few things that I'm freaked out by (but not necessarily afraid of) a few of these are:
Spiders
Flying bugs (especially moths, and bees / wasps)
Drains, those ones that are like a hole in the side of a gutter, or the ones that are like a grate with a really really low hole under it. Not the drain in the shower. (Don't laugh, childhood trauma brought on by a nightmare)
Pain ie. when I see people on TV getting hurt (like when a skateboarder stacks it and breaks an arm, or I hear people in movies talking about how someone fell off of something and broke their leg in three places I get all jumpy)

Greatest fear: Losing the ones I love

"I'm not afraid of death, I just don't want to die"

Solution:
Bugs - well, try and be brave :P
Drains - I try to avoid them, and if I have to step on one, try to pretend they don't scare me
Pain - umm... dunno

Losing a loved one... well, I don't think I'll be able to overcome that

The dream that brought on this fear, feel free to laugh at.

I was in a shopping centre with my Dad and my brother, and we were in one of the big sections that broke off into little sections (like streets, but inside a shop, i dunno what they're called), and across from where I was standing, there was a Humphrey B. Bear toy sitting on the ground, and then it disappeared into the floor. Against my father's advice, I went to go and see where Humphrey went, and stood on the platform, and as it started going down, I looked over at my dad and my brother and watched them disappear as I went below floor level. And I could not escape.

Ok, so don't laugh, writing that up almost made me cry (damn repressed trauma)

Well, I used to be afraid of death, but that's no longer the case. I used to fear being seriously hurt, and I suppose I still have some fear there, but it's a natural level, not inordinate.

I fear my loved ones coming to harm, but that's not unreasonable either.

Used to fear physical confrontation, heights, dangerous situations, but it's no longer the case.

One thing I might add: "Only people make you cry."

I spent my teenage years having panic attacks when I thought about death... Now I no longer fear the inevitable... theres just no point. The downside of my teenage years is, that I have been left with a crippling depression.

Robbie Williams once said "I don't fear death, I just don't want to die" or something like that.

I'm afraid of hurting my loved ones with my death. I once considered committing suicide, but then was too scared to do anything when I thought of all my family and friends crying over my death, and them mourning me at my funeral.

oh, and in regards to my dreams, I've had 2 that really freaked me out, only one led to a fear, and I had a recurring dream that scared me at the time but it wasn't any further than just being frightened when I woke up.
But I'm leaving that like that...

If you get shot at a lot, you either lose the fear of death (and don't have any more problems), or you end up with PTSD.

Phobias: Fear of lesser heights (ie I don't mind standing on the roof of a skyscraper, but not a two-story ladder), fear of power tools.

Greatest fear: Zombies. I kid you not. Zombies.

How I overcome my fears: I don't put myself in positions where I have to surmount my fears...

Some helpful tips for the fearful:

1. If you know your fear is not dangerous, keep reminding yourself that. Try and get close you your fear, Staying away can make it worse.

2. If it is dangerous, Somtimes avoiding is then a good idea. If you feel no harm will come to you, try and face it. To face your fear is to begin overcomming it.

3. Never give up. Keep fighting your fear, and push through, or you'll end up like me.

My biggest fear in life is not to die, for I am not afraid of death, it's as much a part of living as breathing air.

I am however afraid of regret.

On that note, its worth stating that we seldom retain regret for things we've done, but often it lasts in us eternally for the things we wish we'd done and did not.

Phobias- Clowns seriously scare me to death, and grasshoppers!
Fears- Dark water I cannot see the bottom of, losing my family because I'm soooo close to them, and as a medical student I'm kind of scared to actually become a doctor, for fear of making a mistake....=(

And I used to be scared of needles when I was younger and then when I became a nurse I just had to get over it, I was inserting my own IV's and taking my own blood to learn how, just something I learned to live with.

Hmm, I was going to say if homosexuality were to be banned, but I think you'ev got it covered there pretty well. I say homosexuality specificly becuase the day when we can't chose who we have relations with is the day the world should just explode so we can all start over.

Well, banning homosexuality wouldn't really frighten me too much, specifically seen as how I'm in a happy healthy heterosexual relationship. But depriving equal rights on the basis of sexual orientation is just one more nail in the coffin of American Liberty.
