How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

That song has to have my favorite lyrics ever.

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

Tell me those aren't amazing.

I have never even heard of that cigar song, but last time I checked Money and Learning to Fly were pretty popular also.

Just on the slight slight hope that floyd fans might be convinced that floyd doesnt even sound good while stoned + this would = less airplay on popular radio shows = less time I have to listen to it in elevators, common areas etc etc

If you should go skating on the thin ice of life, don't be surprised when a crack in the ice opens under your feet.

Also, Money and to a lesser extent Another Brick in the Wall.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
And shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation in the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Little by little the night turns around
Counting the leaves which tremble at dawn
Lotuses lean on each other in yearning
Under the leaves the swallow is resting
Set the controls for the heart of the sun

Over the mountain watching the watcher
Breaking the darkness waking the grapevine
One inch of love is one inch of shadow
Love is the shadow that ripens the wine
Set the controls for the heart of the sun

The heart of the sun
The heart of the sun

Witness the man who raves at the wall
Making the shape of his question to heaven
Whether the sun will fall in the evening
Will he remember the lesson of giving
Set the controls for the heart of the sun

The heart of the sun
The heart of the sun

Following the path as it leads towards the Darkness in the North
Weary strangers' faces show their sympathy
They've seen that hope before
And if you want to stay for a little bit
Rest your aching limbs for a little bit
Before you the night is beckoning
And you know you can't delay
You hear the night birds calling you
But you can't catch the words they say
Close your aching eyes beyond your name

Mist is swelling, creatures crawling,
Hear the roar get louder in your ears
You know the folly was your own
But the force behind can't conquer all your fears
And if you want to stay for a little bit
Rest your aching limbs for a little bit
Before you the night is beckoning
And you know you can't delay
You hear the night birds calling you
But you can't catch the words they say
Close your aching eyes beyond your name

Throw your thoughts back many years
To the time when there was life in every morning
Perhaps a day will come
When the nights will be as on that morning
And if you want to stay for a little bit
Rest your aching limbs for a little bit
Before you the night is beckoning
And you know you can't delay
You hear the night birds calling you
But you can't catch the words they say
Rest your weary head, be on your way.

Well, it was close... it was either "Welcome to the Machine", or "Comfortably Numb"... and in the end, Comfortably Numb wins it...

Mainly because, while the Pink Floyd version is (of course) definitive, the Sisters of Mercy cover version is pretty amazing, too...

I don't think there are many Pink Floyd fans here. I do think, however, there are many fans of The Wall. To me The Wall is the beginning of the end for Floyd. It is a self-indugent and pretentious Roger Waters ego trip. He doesn't have the writing talent or the voice to carry a double album and the story line is just plan boring. There is nothing cutting edge or artistically interesting about the album.

You want real Floyd pick up Welcome to the Machine, Animals, or Dark Side of the Moon. If you want edgy, artisitically innovative Floyd dig back into the bin for Clouds, Atom Heart Mother, or Ummagumma.

To me The Wall is the most overrated album of all time.

I think another brick in the wall part II We don't need no education is the best because it describes the battle between free thought and institutionalized blind followership that is exemplified in western secularism versus religosity.

Time, or money. Both of those are the most amazing songs I have heard in a good long while. Then again, I only own 3 floyd albums: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and (slap my for my stupidity of 12 year-old ignorance at the time of buying) The *gasp* Division *choke* Bell *shudder*. I feel so dirty....

On another note, I think that things like Arnold Layne are quite randomly funny at times. Although it was probably meant to be ironic, or something. I do that a lot with songs, completely missing their meaning. I think I have aspergers or something

Well, it's about a transvestite caught stealing women's lingerie off clotheslines, you know...? I don't know, is that ironic?

A guy I knew in college used to say that Dark Side of the Moon *was* the last Floyd album... he considered Animals and Wish you were here to be "precursors" to the Wall.

Nope, just randomly funny. Although sometimes I swear some English people just invent Irony within songs/literature/art just to lord it over Americans. I'm English, and it annoys me

All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel

And All that you love
And All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save

And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow, or steal

And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say

And all that you eat
And everyone you meet
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight

And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon

There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact, it's all dark.

I gotta say, damn the woman on Dark Side can sing. She's got a hell of a voice.

I'll give you anything
Everything if you want things

Good song, but not the best Pink Floyd has to offer.
