Leetspeak is stupid, I would rather learn a language I can actually use, like Spanish or Newspeak ;) , than bother to learn a language that is only written that has no practical application. I don't even see how one can think its cool, only the nerd elite do it.

I was suprised about how fluent i was in leet, when i sustained a 15 min conversation to a friend in my english class the day i stayed home "sick" - heh. L33t is a cult thing only of Japaneese style origin (not completely sure). As with all cult things, there are people who sware by it, casually accept it, or completely reject it - many who dismiss it with close minds.

It's not that the 1337 speakers are lazy; you still have to replace ever letter with another number/symbol. Take the word 'ring'. In 1337, it would be '2!n6'. You still have to type the same amount of characters; this is just a way to have fun with it.
