Most underrated music?

Not pub bands that you know personally, but music that has been released, people have heard of it, but never generated the following it deserved.

I'd say Kyuss. It blows me away, a fantastic band that no-one really cared about (well, not on a huge scale anyway) until they broke up and later Queens of the Stone Age came about as a result. They're still pretty obscure.

Honourable mention for the Butthole Surfers, but not all of their stuff was good.

No way man - the Butthole Surfers ROCK...they deserve more than an honourable mention-!

Even if the last album was a little more tame.

Haha, they are definitely great. But their underratedness (is that a word?) Is part of the reason they're good in the first place :)

Gotta be Public Image Ltd. hands down. The early stuff anyway. Look at how many others they've influenced. But it all went to hell after Keith Levene left the group.

"Classical Music" - it has cultural and artistic value, is entertaining, and is, without a doubt, the best music Western society has produced - yet it remains horribly underrated.

FRENCH OPERA!!!

Notre Dame de Paris, i think it's the 1995 one, is definately the best. The "belle" suite is so haunting!

how could you mention the butthole surfers without mentioning the sonic youth?

True, I guess. But I think Sonic Youth are less underrated than the Butthole Surfers. For example, their recent concerts down here sold out (AND I MISSED OUT  ) and most people into modern music have heard of them as opposed to the Surfers.

true enough, sonic youth has enjoyed alot more success then the surfers, but sonic youth is alot better (at least i think) and deserves alot more credit then they get. of course i could also talk about good ol mudhoney, then i would lead into black flag and the melvins and, well... im just to tired at the moment.

SKA SUCKS {Propagandhi}

Ska sucks.
Ska revival isn't cool, you stupid fuck.
The bands are only in it for the bucks.
And if you don't believe me you're a schmuck.
But the trend will die out with any luck.

I'd just like to put my vote in for the 'Butts'.
Bloody awesome band to see live, btw. I saw them in '91 - one of the best live bands I've ever seen.
Mexican Caravan is one of the best rock songs around. Then's there's 'Sweatloaf'. "Daddy what's the meaning of regret?"

Killdozer are very under-rated too, imo. They were more than a joke band with a gravelly voiced singer. Some of their songs were bloody awesome.

They Might Be Giants has to be one of the most underrated bands...especially their first album and their second, Lincoln. Still listen to it today.

Butthole Surfers, Public Image Ltd. great additions to the list.
Sonic Youth is great, but don't think they qualify- they have been the modern rock critic's darlings for 20 years, have had platinum albums, and have been on the simpsons...

The The - great songwriter, get the album Infected or Mindbomb

Dead Can Dance- try album Spleen and Ideal

Die Warzau - band from detroit, kind of industrial funk best album
Big Electric Metal Bass Face

Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy -song Television

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - 13 above the Night

Nitzer Ebb - Ebbhead

Machines of Loving Grace - both albums great

Course Of Empire - first cd

Pixies - Doolittle

Pogues - Peace and Love

Pop Will Eat Itself - Dos Didos Mis Amigos

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peepshow

Sister Machine Gun - metropolis

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland or Vision Thing

Silly Wizard - Irish folk music

Without a doubt Blues music, as a genre, is completely underrated. The Blues are the roots that gave us rock, jazz, hip-hop, and almost every type of modern pop music, yet you can almost never find a radio statio devoted to the Blues or even one that will occasionally play Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Blind Lemon, Bessie Smith, Sonny Boy Williamson, Lightning Hopkin, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, or any of the great classical Blues miusicians.

Nor are Blues young guns, like Keb'mo, Robert Cray, or Susan Tedeschi, getting any air time, either.

The Blues is an American original and a national treasure, yet unfortunately this music genre, that came out of the heart and soul of the Black American experience, has been almost totally ignored by today's young people, especially young Blacks.

Blues isn't really the roots of jazz, since jazz really more or less came out of African improvisational music, but you're on the right track. Robert Randolph and the Family Band is great up and coming gospel/blues group and certainly don't forget Kenny Wayne Sheppard.

and Stevie Ray...

The Presidents of the United States of America
I wouldn't say they're under-rated. I'd argue over-rated. One good song, a couple of ok ones and the rest totally forgetable. A one-hit wonder.

Also I wouldn't say 'The Pixies' are under-rated, but for different reasons. They were pretty popular in the time, and certainly critics loved them. Look at how popular their comeback is (and deservedly so).

I think 'Big Black' deserves a mention for under-rated band. "Kerosene" still rocks even after 20 years.

Here's one for you Kiwis: 'Sticky Filth'.
"Weep Woman Weep' is probably the greatest Heavy metal song to ever come out of 'Naki.
If you're into good old-fashioned garage metal, I strongly recommend trying to get your hands on a copy of Sticky's classic debut album 'Weep woman Weep'. Cool cover too.
