The best band of all time?

I myself would have to say Pink Floyd. I have all their albums as well as Pink Floyd: The Wall DVD. Even my dad(whos 53 years old) listened to Pink Floyd so this shows you how all these generations of people still enjoy their music even after their demise(which occured a long time ago)

Hmm, how about the Duke Ellington band? Or maybe Cab Calloway's Orchastra with Billie Holliday? Wait, the Benny Goodman band was pretty good. No, no, I'm definitely going with the Glenn Miller Orchastra.

Those guys can tell you that "Best Band" is a pretty fleeting honor.

I'd definitely say Pink Floyd... no band has ever been able to imitate them, unless you count their various tribute bands i.e. Australian Pink Floyd, which comes pretty close :P

This is my first post so I devirginized myself for an important cause:
First off get rid of the yahoo bands cluttering up this post, its obvious this is a battle between the mighty Led Zep and Pink Floyd (Beatles yea.... maybe on your mom's forum). Both bands rate high on the amount of drugs used and artistic value however Led Zep rocks so much harder (obviously Stairway and just about every song off Zoso...) than Pink. But then again Pink has such a wide variety of sound and disregard for the norm (eg. Animals with its huge track lengths, WYWH with its 13 min instrumentals). Its a unanimous tie... and Nirvana was a pioneer for rock, name another band from the 90's that rocked even half as hard other than Tool. God I'm going to be embarassed to tell my kids my generation was responcible for Blink182 and bull like that. :gundge:

The wall, pretty much sucks guys, sorry but floyd when they went all stadium-rock just poops on the fun. Also i had better mention Relics- a perfect compilation of early floyd stuff and obviously barretts solo stuff is awsome. "look at the sky, look at the river, isn't it good?"

Don't forget Yes, Chris Squire and Rick Wakeman were definite pioneers, and some people say that Pink Floyd is derivitive of Yes' earlier work. Yes was singing about spaceships and weird crap while Floyd was still a Beatles tribute band.

Also don't forget Rush, Hemishperes is a masterpiece of the whole prog/art-rock movement.

No contest, The Beatles for sure. At one point in '64 they had the top FIVE spots on the singles charts. If you go into a crowd and start humming 'Hey Jude', almost everyone will know what the next line is. On top of the popularity, their music is amazingly good as well.

As runners-up I'd say Dream Theater, Nirvana, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Are you kidding? Rollins is the worst. I don't get what people see in him at all. All of his antics and his pose are just annoying. He's a clown. He was the beginning of the end for Black Flag, I think. Though, most people seem to love My War. No problem with the rest of what you said..great stuff. I still have to go with the Ramones though.

Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have to be three of the most over-rated bands of all time. If there was a hell, it would be listening those three bands.

(Sniffs snootily) It is always interested to see just how limited people's musical range is. I am referring to the sort of person who genuinely thinks Queen or Metallica are the greatest band of all time.

(Ducks for cover)

Me, I can't stand The Beatles. But I can't deny their influence, either. Goalposts change over time, however. There isn't any point in criticising Nirvana for not being as innovative as The Beatles (Though they weren't) or as popular. Times have changed. Will we really, truly remember Radiohead in 10 years time? Metallica, like the poor, will always be with us - because in 10 years time they will still me trundling on, mining the seam of diminishing returns and laughing all the way to the bank.

I speculate why so many whiney white boys are being nominated. Where are the brothas and sistas who invented rock'n'roll? Just that honourary whiteboy, Jimi Hendrix (Who played geeeeetar and hence was 'one of us'). No Otis Redding. no Aretha Franklin (Though we all loved Irma's jean commercial tune, eh?). No Ike and / or Tina Turner. No Leadbelly. NO-ONE HAS EVEN MENTIONED BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS YET!!! ty of unconcious musical apartheid? (He says smugly, as En Vogue (!) alternates with Duke Ellington on his speakers)

I think we should all vote for Woody Guthrie, because it cracks me up to think that the USA's alternate national Anthem, 'This land Is My Land,' was written by a fervent communist. Ah, life's little absurdities.

The Beatles are easily the best. No one else even comes close in terms of creativity, influence, or popularity.

I don't really feel like ranking a whole list, but I'll name a few, by era, starting in the 20th century:

Pre-war:
Blues musicians, especially Delta blues, especially Son House. Blind Willie McTell was great, too. This is the only era I will listen to "blues" music from, except some Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. BB King makes me want to vomit. Blues music and M&Ms commercials are mutually exclusive.

Post-war to 1960:
Frank Sinatra is probably my favorite. Glenn Miller did great stuff, too.

'60s, other than the Beatles whom I have already mentioned:
The Yardbirds (especially Page era, which was when they got interesting, albeit inconsistent, and really paved the way for most of what Led Zeppelin did anyway), the Who (up until and partially including Tommy, but none of that prog rock Quadrophenia crap that they degraded into later), and the garage rock and psychedelic movements (Electric Prunes, Status Quo, etc.), Bob Dylan, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience (Hendrix by himself I could take or leave).

'70s:
A pretty desolate time. Led Zeppelin was good, but as I alluded to earlier most of their creative impulse came while Page was with the Yardbirds; they just threw on some overdrive and had Plant sing Relf's parts up an octave or two. Funk was good. Prog rock sucked. Especially Pink Floyd. They don't belong on this list. They should be on the "Most Pretentious Bands of All Time" list. The person who put them at 1298 was being incredibly generous, because, while I can't name 1297 bands off the top of my head that are better than Pink Floyd, the chances of any given band actually being worse than Pink Floyd I estimate to be 1 in 10^14. The Ramones were good through the first few albums (especially the first three, the Tommy era). I love Barry White, too, if only because it's so hard to find a singer with a voice lower than a piccolo.

'80s:
Even worse. Prince was probably the only thing worth listening to seriously (there was a lot of stuff worth listening to for laughs).

'90s:
Ugh. Perhaps the worst of all. I can't think of a single mainstream artist from the '90s that I like. There were some from Japan, though, like Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Zoobombs, and Guitar Wolf.

2000s:
Some of the garage rock around now is good, but most of the really good stuff is still more-or-less undiscovered (thank goodness I live within driving distance of Detroit). The Detroit Cobras, Sahara Hotnights, the Come-ons, the Black Keys.

Of all time... Zeppelin has to take it. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are gods, no questions there.

 It was John Paul Jones' genius that made Zep what it was, not Plant so much and certainly not Page.

But, Led Zepplin was in fact the greatest rock band ever, good job on that one. Maybe not the greatest overall band ever as that honor would fall to Weather Report, but definitely pioneers of rock. This offer not valid outside the USA.

You would actually put the beach boys above pink floyd??

Are you degrading the Beach Boys due to the quality of their music, or the style?

Not even the Beatles could match their vocal harmonies and pop sensibilities.

???? I think the only bands I'd agree with there, are the Chili Peppers and Flogging Molly. Maybe Tenacious D too.

Otherwise, you just listed a whole bunch of either bland or downright shitty bands. Megadeath, Rob Zombie, Soulfly and Limp Bizkit being among the worst.

Oh, and btw: you don't know what you're talking about.

Edit: X-Japan is tolerable. I guess.

Will we really, truly remember Radiohead in 10 years time?

we absolutely WILL remember radiohead in ten years time, because apart from the fact that they will still be making gorgeous music, they do not fit into any one genre. the only bands we remember from a particular genre are the originals and best. as radiohead are in their own genre, they will be forever remembered.

Determining the best band is an exercise in futility. As always, those who feel compelled to continue spinning their wheels include: a) hip wannabes who think that their personal coolness is directly proportional to the level of obscurity of their favorite bands, b) those who believe that one genre, decade, or some other random delimiter somehow makes the associated music far superior to any other, c) those under the mistaken impression that what makes a band great is its level of influence, and d) the few who equate complexity with greatness (i.e., prog fans).

That said, Frank Zappa stomps all over everybody else mentioned so far. My main criteria are, in order: 1) individual artistic expression, 2) amount of diversity his artistic expression allowed, 3) ability to put his personal stamp on everything he did, regardless of the style, 4) recognition of his accomplishments among musical experts (actual experts in the field, as opposed to music critics), and 5) work ethic.

So for those who disagree, please elaborate on your own criteria. Maybe then we can stop spinning our wheels.

You must be kidding!!

Everyone knows that John Paul Jones was the real talent in that band and Page was usually so drunk he couldn't tune his guitar.

Nirvana sucks.

Weather Report is the greatest band ever.

What about all the awesome solos Page just came up with on the spot? Page and Plant were the ones that actually came up with the songs, and John Paul Jones was one of the greatest bassists of all time, but there would be no Zep without Page and Plant.

Tool Lateralus.

There are plenty of good bands today, but we don't hear about them. (To any idiots almost about to reply to this post, no, I'm not saying people don't hear about Tool. I mean other bands.)

46 & 2 is one of my favorite songs.

You guys do know you're arguing about PUNK bands, right?

Some punk bands didn't even know how to tune a guitar. Punk was about noise and aggression and the message, not really music.

And Pink Floyd is only good if you're stoned. Again: Weather Report, greatest band ever.

punk is great, its anti-music.

well old punk any ways

I think in my country I will outlaw geeeetarz, even string will be illegal, in case someone tries to make one and start thrusting their crotch about while wanking out the intro to Strairway To Heaven.

The only musical instraments allowed in my country will be trad band instraments, and they will not be avvailable without a license. Whiney Allison Hannigan types will not be allowed them.

Jazz will be the only music played on the radio. Radios will be rationed and not available as private property in case of misuse.

The element Lead will be deleted from the periodic table and replaced with a new element called 'Totally Crap.'

(Sniffs snootily) Snootily, indeed. :)

Okay, Marvin Gaye. You happy now?

I myself would have to say Pink Floyd. I have all their albums as well as Pink Floyd: The Wall DVD. Even my dad(whos 53 years old) listened to Pink Floyd so this shows you how all these generations of people still enjoy their music even after their demise(which occured a long time ago)

I could like your Dad.

So our criteria are invalid, but yours are acceptable? Way to go hypocrisy.

Uh, no. First of all, you're not using the term hypocrisy correctly. If you're calling me a hypocrite, call me a hypocrite. With that grammar lesson behind us, let me explain my point more clearly. I wanted to come to terms with the criteria being used to determine the "best" band. Otherwise, how can you compare The Beatles to The Ramones, for example? They are both great bands, both important bands, but for different reasons. One expanded what a rock band could do, the other reminded us what music is supposed to be about just as some prog bands were losing sight of their artistic expression.

I posted my criteria, along with my personal favorite, so that others could do the same in order to work towards a consensus. I initially dismissed certain criteria to start focusing on what should be important. If you can justify any of those, please do so.

Oh, and Neil Young is another one of my favorites, probably because he meets my criteria as well.
