I have a friend who would like to move to the states from London, but he says he thinks its near impossible. Something about he cant just move over here and look for a job. He says he was told that he had to have a job set up first and all kinds of crazy stuipulations just to move here. Does anyone know the process and rules for moving into the states from another country or perhaps know of some useful websites?
I cant believe it would be as hard as hes been told it would be. I mean why would it be a big deal moving here from London? We have people move here all the time from other countries I thought. anyone who knows about the process, your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure about the American system, but if it's anything like the Canadian system, I imagine he would be required to have a job arrangement here so when he arrives he can't immediately claim welfare or something like that.

He needs to visit the American Embassy and file an application for a Green Card/to become a citizen or a Work Visa if he already has a job lined up but doesn't want to become a citizen.

dude im the same as your friend. i wanna move to the states, and i have done some research into this. it is as hard as he says.

however there is something called the Green Card Lottery i found out about, in which the US gives 50,000 (or something ridiculous like that) Green cards out each year like a prize-draw. However I also found that you were forbidden to enter if you were a UK citizen... which i thought was very odd, and got me wondering if there was some kind of special immigrational arrangement between the USA and the UK? However I never pursued that further. Maybe your friend can?

there are basically 3 ways to do it

easiest, but not best, way is to marry an american. even then you can be seperated for quite a while before you can join your beloved in the US. (or if you have other close relatives already legally here they can help you get in)

the green card lottery. seems impossible but an australian friend of mine just "won" which is good since her beloved is another woman and they can't get married for her to move to the US. she had been on the list for about a year before she won.

be able to do certain hard to fill jobs in the US. easiest way is to be a registered nurse. 2 year course and hes IN. there are others but i cant think what they are but he can find them on the net.

oh if he is RICH, he can put a certain amount of an investment into a US business (or bring his own here) i think its about $1,000,000 but im not sure. or sometimes he can work for a british firm in the US but there are regulations about that too but the firm would take care of that part

but for the most part he is correct you cant come her on a tourist or student visa then find a job and stay, IF he finds a job that qualifies, he has to at least go to canada (or mexico or back to britain) and get a work visa through the embassy.

but REALLY, if he hasnt spent much time here, he should come for the 6 months (or is it 3?) of a tourist visa to see if he really WILL like it here. there are so many different kinds of places here that he should look around to see what suits him best. (can't you just see a london boy working as a cowboy in new mexico?)
