Where does the best modern music come from?
What region/country does in your opinion the best music come from?
(By "modern", I mean the 1950s-today)
I'm about tied for Britain and the US West. So many amazing and extremely influential bands have come from Britain...but I have a big soft spot for grunge and stoner metal that originated in the US West :D

I'd say Britain. Although I am biased. But the greatest bands/artists ever are from Britain - Pink Floyd, Bowie, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Clash. I could go on. There are great bands from America though - the best probably being The Ramones.

You left out Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. :D

I wasn't sure how "modern" this was meant to be, so I judged it by what's current today (as in, not factoring anything more than ten years old)
edit: man, I'm sort of dull today. Next time I'll remember to read the post before I vote. In that case, I'd say a tie betwixt Canada/East US and the UK.

Throw in Kraftwerk and KMFDM.
Not exactly close to home for me, so I don't know a whole lot of bands from there, but from an outside glance that music scene seems to be pretty good.
Theres also a lot of well-regarded metal bands (Meshuggah and Kreator for example) that come from that region too, but that's not really my thing.

Canadian Music That is Good. (IMO) There's more than Celine Dion or Avril Lavigne to consider, and a great deal more to consider than the acts I've listed here:
The High Dials
The Deadly Snakes
Mean Red Spiders
Nanochrist
The Tragically Hip
Rush
54 40
Sloan
Ashley MacIsaac
Loreena McKennit
Tim Tamashiro
Oscar Peterson
Gordon Lightfoot
...and of course, the unimitable William Shatner, praise be to the Bill, blessed be the ground upon which his feet have walked.
Let's not forget that every country produces the musical equivalent of a turd with breathtaking regularity. I don't think, for example, the US ought not to be included just because of Hilary Duff, or that the UK needs to be excluded because of The Spice Girls. Sweden begat Roxette, Russia Autograf. There's musical turds galore, at every turn - a veritable sewerful of them.
The trick is to hold your nose long enough to find something without so much shit caked all over it.
Rush
Whoops, forgot them.

Yeah, but the thing is that only two bands (Sloan and Rush) in your list I have heard of. There are proportionally many more bands from other nations of very good quality. Canada appears to deliver only a scant handful of (famous) good bands and a disproportionate amount of crap 'artists'. I like Canada for other things, but the music scene there seems to blow big time.

- well, I just gave you a list, so now you've heard of 'em. Look 'em up on Kazaa, and maybe you'll like what you hear. Simply saying 'Canada Sucks' is laaaaazy. Simply relying upon the top 40 charts will deliver unto you a plethora of the aforementioned crap. Look at the top 40 for any given country, and you'll see, it's mostly just...crap. Canada is no better or no worse than any other country, including the US, for producing unlistenable/irritating monkeydung.

- I think what you mean to say here is that you have yet to be presented with good Canadian music, which is hardly surprising. You have to dig for it, you see. What makes it internationally is usually the shittiest stuff going - look at Michael Jackson, Olivia Newton-John or Wham! in the 80s. There's famous international acts for you. Everyone knows them, sure, but they're the butt of jokes worldwide.
Can I ask you, what is your primary source for music?

Well, duh. But if the music isn't reaching me down here in Australia (no-one has heard of Sloan, who I still think are a good band, for instance) then you have to forgive the outside impression. I intend on checking out that list, don't worry. (I suppose we have the same problem here...what with Silverchair, Jet, and the Vines being our most famous musical exports at the moment. Actually, those bands aren't that bad and have some OK songs...)

Yeah. Its hard though, because its a long way from here, most of it is obscure.
Can I ask you, what is your primary source for music?
The Internet, mostly. When in the mood for something new, I tend to search within styles I like, get told about bands by friends, etc. I don't watch MTV, or listen to much radio, as exemplified by my complete ignorance earlier in this thread on who Nelly Futardo is :p Don't worry, i'm not some top-40 kid.

Cool. I'm only peripherally aware of Nelly Futado anyway. I've heard she's Canadian, I've heard people gush over her at times - but I think I've only heard half of one of her songs, it sounded like aural saccharine.
I'll no doubt hear more of her when the inevitable happens, and her music is used to shill tampons or skin lotion.

I think the best music comes from all over the world, every place has its Bruce Springsteens, Edith Piaf's, Jimmy Page's, Gord Downey's and Jem's
then again, all places seem to have the bad as well, the Britney Spear's, Geri Halliwell's, Hillary Duff's and other similar sellout soul-less musical acts (note the lack of the word artist).
