Some people shoot slugs out of shotguns, instead of buckshot. Some shotguns have rifled barrels for this purpose, and are as accurate as a rifle out to about 100 yards. Hence the scope.

Well that's really useful for "home defence". Heh, I've seen American gun lobbyists in documentaries, proudly declaring that their bolt-action scope rifle will keep night-time intruders at bay...riiight...

If they really do fear the black man breaking in during the night to abduct their daughter, a small pistol or even a Taser would make more sense. Otherwise, from what are they protecting their home? Urban warfare?

you've got that wrong buddy. pistols are more feared then large weapons, because rifles and shotguns are used for hunting. You sound ignorant saying "pistols are ok". But then again, i think all guns should be legal, how much fun would it be to go bird hunting with a fully automatic rifle?

Well, each person can make their own choice as to what is adequate for self-defense. There is also "fun". I shoot most of my weapons as a hobby, so I like to have guns that don't fit in any particular niche.

Pistols are notorious for not stopping people. Yes, they die, but while they're dying, they continue to be a threat. Maybe even kill someone. So, you want something extra lethal. Shotguns are pretty good at very short range, but if you're hit with a 30-06 hunting round out of a bolt action, and you're hit in the torso, you're very likely to stop whatever you're doing. In addition, no doctor will probably be able to save you.

Modern hunting softpoints have a tendency, especially at close range, of destroying a wide radius around the point of impact. Keeps the deer from running off if you make an off shot. For people, it is substantial overkill, and far more damage than you'll take from a military style round.

I don't want an intruder to live to tell his side of the story, so I would use my 300 Win Mag in the house. I'll have to get a new carpet, and a new section of wall, but it will be worth it.

Pistols are for when you're not expecting action, but someone forces it on you. It's strictly for social situations you didn't want. If you knew you were going to a gunfight, you would have brought a rifle.

I might add that I've shot quite a number of people in combat with a bolt action, and it works just fine for me, close or long. So don't laugh.

Well in that case, any guy that has a big car or house is sexually inadequate too! I don't think that not liking guns matters, one of my friends only dates guys in the NRA and according to her.... well guns have Nothing to do with it ;) .
