Is life a rat race?

I need some people's thoughts, is this life truly ruled by the scramble to get enough money to live? Sometimes it feels like it to me, but then again I just read an article for class about how the globalization economy is basically a rat race. I just need to hear someone else's words other than "get an education in order to compete for enough work to get your kid through college and into the same rat race."

Well, from my viewpoint, that unfortunately is what life is about right now.
The acclimation of wealth.
Four ways:
1. Work for it. Dulldulldull.
2. Random chance. OMG LOTTO!
3. Be original. Inventor or somesuch.
4. Life of crime. ARRRRRRR!
I'd like to see it be about something else, but everything seems to get sidelined by the need to get money so you live in (relative) comfort. People just fit in what they can around this.

42! Nah, that sucks.
*plonks himself down in a chair*
Now, here's the meaning of life. Thank you, Brigitte. M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special.
Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations, and, finally, here are some completely gratuitous pictures of penises to annoy the censors and *snip*

Unless you plan to move to a socialist country then, yes...You do have to earn earn/get/make money to live on.
My advice would be... Consentrate on doing it for yourself first before you start thinking about having kids to support.
If you are working for a company that you actually like whatever it is that they do and you like what you do on a daily basis things won't seem like a pain in the ass. (at least you will be racing for a team you like)
Also, the thing about the "rat race" that people don't tell you is that YOU decide how far you want to run... Decide what you want out of life and than work to get there. If you don't compare yourself to other people who's priorities aren't the same as yours, then you won't feel like it's a race you are losing or barely keeping up with everyday.
And DO finish college if possible, even if it takes you a while.
Do internships and have jobs and be involved in things while you're in school. Figure out what things you like to be involved with, then it won't be so hard to figure out when you get out of school.
If there's something you WANT to do when you graduate then you won't feel like you are just doing it to get money.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate!

:Why are you dressed as a tiger?
::It was a bet. God told us to do it.
::We're doing it for an advertisement: Tiger brand coffee, is a real treat. Even tigers prefer it, to real meat!
::We found the tiger skin in a bicycle shop in Cairo. The owner wanted us to take it to Dalai Salaam...
Where did that fishy go?
Fishy, fishy, fishy... oh!
Hmm... it seems your leg has been bitten sort of... off! If you're going to play football or anything, try to favor the other leg.

This is some good advice. Don't compare yourself with those that have priorities that aren't the same as yours. Cool

You don't need to participate in the 'rat race' if you don't want to. Of course, you need enough money to maintain a reasonable standard of living, but to achieve that you don't have to sacrifice the rest of your life in pursuit of money and status. The problem is that people don't just want to live comfortably: they want meaningless things that they think will make them happy. I would much rather live modestly and enjoy my life than be miserable working 70 hours a week so that I can come home to a plasma TV and stainless steel refrigerator.

Thanks.. I try, I'm just learning too. :)
But that's one of the best ones that I've been told and that's helped me figure things out so far. At the moment I'm trying to move out of a city that doesn't value the same things as I do... Comparing myself to the people here got me down for a while.. (boo!)
Also, talk to people who are actually doing whatever it is you think you want to be doing. It helps you clarify your goals and see if you're on the right track.
