The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: The Preview

We have an orbital view of Earth, spinning in quiet and peaceful prosperity. Louis Armstrongs What a Wonderful World is playing in the background. It's nice, it's serene, it's quite relaxing. In fact, something inside you just wants to say "Everything's going to be okay." Then the Earth explodes like the Death Star was parked in orbit.

That's right, I have seen the preview for The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: The Movie and I must say I am almost giddy with anticipation. My giddiness died a bit when the movie I was seeing started (Come on, there is no way it's that freaking easy to steal the Declaration of Independence) but now it's back and stronger than ever!

Anybody else see it?

EDIT: Link to the preview:

No....but I did see a preview for a movie where zoo animals leave the zoo and psycotic penguins are identical to Solid Snake.

The preview for the Guide? Nope, I went to www.imdb.com but the preview link they had didn't work. I saw it in the theatres.

OMGSD (Oh My Global Standard Deity) Yes!!!!!! During the preview, when the music started my eyes got all wide and I practically yelled, "OMGSD it's the HG2G" I was Soo happy. I too died a little on the inside when National Treasure began, and I had to momentarily not jump up and down screaming, "May 6th, May 6th, May 6th!!" You had better believe that moments after that movie was over I said, "OMGSD, that was the best thing I've ever seen," and my friends replied, "Ummmm... no, that movie wasn't all that good." At this point I had to explain that I was talking about the preview for HG2G: The Movie, and they looked at me like I was insane.

So, anyway.... I'm so happy the movie is finally coming out because I feel as though I have been waiting for WAY too long (which we all have).

05-12-2004, 08:32
um what was so great about the preview?
I saw it too and it didn't seem all that special. So the world blew up. Yay, the production values were good, but it gives no indication as to whether they're going to do it right. Personally, I doubt they will.

But I am happy they're making a major picture out of it.

Just hope they set a scene in Belgium so everyone will understand that the screenplay is serious...sorry I couldn't help it.

Oh, I know they'll screw up the movie, but the preview is good. I think it's the combination of sudden action and just as sudden stillness (That'd be Earth, then Earth exploding, then everything freezing and "Don't panic" appearing on the screen).

Hahaha, yes, I was so excited. :D I had no idea the preview was going to be before National Treasure (which was an "okay" movie, I thought) but due to realizing that a Hitchhiker's Guide movie would be coming out in May I was grinning my head off through the first 10 minutes or so of the film, regardless of what was going on onscreen. *laughs*

You got excited about that??? It looks pretty poor to me.

Maybe this should be pre-booked on the "worst hollywoodisations" thread... I doubt that it won't be screwed up/hollywoodised or ridiculously simplified as so many good pics/books seem to be when released for the US market. :(

A feeling of dooooommmm is enveloping me as I think of May 6 2005..... :p

if they hollywoodise it then it'll be bad
if they stick to the book/audio play/tv series (latter to a lesser extent ;) ) then it'll be great.

Adams didnt seem to mind that none of the radio shows derivitives had anything to do with each other, it was sort of part of the 'thing', you know?
As long as it can stay with the HG2G form its good by me, I want to see if they get Vogons right, or possibly include the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Trall.
So, an idea occurs. Maybe the movie will be based on the radio show, the FIRST TV series (or was that a movie?), or the textgame?
For those who saw the middle part and said "OMGWTFWHYDIDNTIKNOWTHIS!?!", the TV series was done in the Monty Python style (while not a bad thing in of itself) of rather low production values. Google HG2G to see. Zaphod is basicaly two guys in a fat suit :P

I've got a bad feeling about this movie...

Not that I have a particular good sixth sense when it comes to films. I actually thought Van Helsing was going to be good!

By the way, Lunatic Goofballs - if it's safe to smoke afterwards, it's not a Pan Galactic Gargleblaster.

Was there more than one TV series? I've got one on video where Zaphod is just one guy with an unconvincing extra head attached to his shoulder. Woah, I just had a look at the video. It looks like Cliff Richard.

One thing that makes me cautiously optimistic is that it's allegedly based on the final version of Douglas Adams's screenplay before he died, so it won't be totally off the mark.

The use of It's a Wonderful World is also a good sign, as anybody who's heard Fit the Sixth (or seen the appropriate episode of the miniseries) will attest. Although I would really like to hear Journey of the Sorceror. Preferably during the opening credits. :)

The one thing that bugs me is - who's going to do all of the "Voice of the Guide" bits. Those are usually my favorite parts, after all. (And no, it's not just because I have them memorized.)

That's because the production kept getting delayed and Adams despaired of the movie ever being made. Sadly, it took his death to get the necessary impetus behind the movie.

Mos Def is a different kind of funny, though. Sort of off-the-wall. Ford Prefect is supposed to be more deadpan funny.

Sam Rockwell will definitely be a quality Zaphod, though. Aside from Mos Def, the cast is a group of relatively little-known actors, which can be taken as a good sign with a movie like this.

HG2G and all the rest of the series ROCKS!
In the beginning of the trailer I was so happy and marked May 6th in my calendar but then I started to think stuff like: Damn, I live in Finland. It takes ages before the movie, not to mention the sequels, is being shown back here.
Well, at least they don't dub movies here, so I think theyll show it sooner than for example, in Germany (the poor lads have to dub even the dogs' barking).
