alt.idol

You've heard of Pop Idol, or American Idol, or probably both actually, now how about alt.idol?
It's not a major deviation from the original idea, but instead of just a singer, potentials are allowed a singer, drums, up to 4 guitars, and, if they really feel they must, a keyboardist.
Judges: When I first came up with this idea, I thought of John Peel, but sadly that's no longer possible. So instead, how about Sharon Osbourne, Fat Mike (of NOFX), and Till Lindemann (of Rammstein). Any other ideas for judges, or improvements of the format would be greatly appreciated.

But (serious point here), why don't the TV/record companies realise what a good idea this would be? There's a very large market that this could be aimed at, and, while the resulting band would be extremely over-commercial, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as it could get a lot more people interested in this sort of music, and other, established (or un-established) bands would also profit from it.

Any self respecting musician or artist wouldn't parade themselves out like that for fame.

LOL, maybe you will be as important as Sum 41

I didn't think up this idea to parade the musician(s)/band(s) who come out of it. I want alternative music to be more mainstream, as it's a more vital (not as in important) form of music than the current crap clogging up the charts.

And I don't want it to happen for myself either. I have absolutely jackshit musical talent, so I wouldn't benefit from it at all. But just in the last two months I've seen several bands who really would benefit from it.

Sum 41 are a blight on the face of the earth... I was thinking more of bands like CapDown, Arms of Kismet, Duke Spirit. All great bands with (comparatively) tiny fanbases, that really do deserve greater recognition. The point I was making was that the alternative music scene needs a shot in the arm, and something along the lines of alt.idol would be the perfect way of giving it one.

Just a note - as a musician who has been in several alternative bands and loved alternative music for years, I loathe the idea of it becoming "more mainstream".

the only problem is that the real creative bands

the weens, primus', they wont come out for these types of things because exposure and money arent their prime directives.

This would only appeal to people who support the idea of becoming a superstar.

Besides, since the media has all control over reconds (Vivedni Universal) they wont support something that might be "different" because people are taught very quickly what music to like and where to fit in. They dont want to disrupt that

Ya, i can agree with this

I produce an obscure type of techno music. Seriously, if everyone listened to it, and it was as marketed as normal music, it would SUCK.

if this means anything to you, my comparison would be Neophyte and Scott Brown to someone like DJ Producer and Hellfish.
