What music do you like best?

Personally, I really like Black Metal, like by Dimmu Borgir. Proper metal should be dark, orchestral, majestic, and evil. Not like some bands, which are like a pig being sodomised with a spear.

(Power) Metal! :D

Well... I kind of enjoy lots of differen kinds of music (classical, virtuos, some folk...)

But in my cd-collection one will mostly find power metal, followed by Heavy metal, and black metal, and neo-classical metal (Yngwie, Rusty Cooley).

I mean, I just LOVE dragons, elves, magical swords and all that cheesyness that comes with Power metal, (The Mystical Powers of Strange Cosmic Chaotic Abyssal Wonders in the Seventh Realm of Hakyrikon, just an example of a cd), could be that I just love speedy, long and technical guitar licks and solos. Although I must admit that it was the Swedish Shred God Yngve Malmsten (Yngwie Malmsteen for you US of Ace) that got me to play guitar at all, and I thank him for all that I have become now! :P

Ah well, I will stop my ranting..

Ah well, I will stop my ranting.. Have ye ever heard Dimmu Borgir? They have a backing 46-piece orchestra, and most of their songs involve satanic vikings, or some mixture of the 2.

I find heavy metal is like Beethoven, it taps the rawest emotions. If Beethoven were alive today, he'd be a metalhead. Do not like Slipknot though.

I sure don't like R&B.

This is so interesting. Computer people like metal.

The lyrics in much metal are so much more poetic than other genres.

"Courage and consistency
Bravery and valour
Honour and pride
For what was it all worth"

Someone vote something else! I wasn't anticipating this huge flow of Metalheads!

Brit rock, pop-punk, and techno. Where does that fit on your poll?

If Beethoven were alive today, he'd be a metalhead.
Maybe he would appreciate metal, but I see no reason to believe that he wouldn't still be an art music composer.

Anyway, do you like Emperor, another great black metal band. How about Ulver? I also love Opeth and the Gathering (not really metal).

There's only so much flexibility with polls.

I'm so sorry, I forgot techno. Damnit. Brit Rock - normal rock, Punk Pop - dunno, your discretion, techno - oopsy.

Of course I´ve heard of Dimmu Borgir, I have a few of their cd´s. Not the best but they are decent, :P

I am not really that much into Viking Metal (considering I´m a swede that´s odd, no? :P) nor Folk Metal (damn crazy finns I say! ;) ) but I do have some cd´s of that, Turisas, Thyrfing, Elvenking, etc.

;)

But still I always go back to my high speed power metal, all hail DragonForce (so cheesy but sooo good! :P)! \m/

*Although my naighbours don´t seem to be enjoying this the same way I do...

The only power metal I like is Blind Guardian and Nightwish. However, I will admit to owning a Rhapsody CD!

Dammit, you put Classical, then Baroque. This implies that you are refering to the 'eras' of 'legitimate' music rather than the more coliqueal(sp) use of classical to encompass western compositional music or whatever snooty term you want to give to what most people understand when you say classical. But by putting Baroque and Classical then you're talking about the eras-which leaves out Medival, Romantic, 20th Century, etc....and took up the slot you could have used for JAZZ!!!

Equal amounts of everything except country and anime music and whatnot, really. More rock though.

Hey, that´s always a start, I own all of theirs, :P

But meh! I can´t stand Nightwish... they are just so... not good! :P Blind Guardian, however, has quite alot of decent tunes.

The key difference between symphonies and symphonic metal is that the later is often pompous and lacking in subtlety. I went through a phase of listening to it but it often seems clichéd after a while. There are only so many songs about magic swords, blood, winged unicorns, and the like that I can take. Life, while not entirely bereft of heroism, tragedy and satanic Vikings has a lot more then that to offer.

Ack! None of the above!

There are several genres that aren't represented here, Techno, Alternative, and others. I think that an "other" category might need to be added for all of the lesser known genres that are out there. Reading your choices, I can't classify the music I like in any of them.

I'm very much into heavy metal, punk, moderate rock, and a bit of techno-rock depending on my feeling. I voted punk up there, by the way.

I detest some forms of music like RnB, pop (as in the plastic-fantastic shit-on-the-industry-one-more-time rubbish), and its similars, and I hate with a passion those who don't even sing live or play their instruments (á la Busted/McFly, who don't play their instruments). Music is an artform; not something to be crapped out of a record-factory by a suit who wants another couple of million quid to his or her name, and as an artform it should be a pure expression of the artist's feelings or the point they're trying to make. Seeing bands like Busted or pop-groups like Girls Aloud making money for nothing makes me seeth with anger at the fact that there are loads of legitimate groups with unique styles trying to crack their way into the business, but can't because another group of chavs are willing to put their face to a sound that isn't theirs and call it music.

True, true.. But, as I said earlier, I don´t mind all that cheezyness that Power metal, especially, brings along with it. Sure it can get a tad bit boring after a while, but then I just turn to some other kind of metal, or perhaps another genre altogether... but ultimately I always come back to Power.

Now, as I said, I also play guitar, and as so I prefer to play "happy" metal (aka power), and my band mates hate me for that, so sometimes I also change my style of playing, instead of speedy technical licks I might do a little darker one, perhaps tune it down and make some more EVIL sounding riffs. So... all in all I am quite open to alot of music, even that evil sounding Anime music (I am an absolute anime whore!).

;)

EDIT: Goodnight though, getting rather tired *yawns*

Does Power metal get a lot of publicity in Scandinavia on the radio and TV? The only power metal or Death/Black Metal Ive heard in England has been through experimentation by downloading from the internet?

I never choose by genre, only by artist.

I am a Black Metal fan as well. Dimmu is not viking metal but they are very good and I have respect for them. Their earlier stuff is better, I'm not that much into the Death Cult Armaggedon stuff. I listen to viking metal such as Mithotyn, Suidakra, and Bathory. I also listen to singer/songwriters and other acoustic bands such as Iron and Wine and the John Butler Trio. I don't limit myself to one genre and stick to it. When it comes to music, people should be open minded. There are more narrow minded people than there are not and If they call me a P**** for the stuff I listen to, That's their problem. :sniper:

I chose metal, but I'm more into hardcore and such.
eg. Norma Jean, Every Time I die, Unearth
(Check them out on purevolume.com)

I do enjoy some classic stuff and whatever. But I just grew up in a different era I suppose. :headbang:

radiohead are just the greatest band, definitely of the nineties, probably of all time. they make achingly beautiful music which has got the modern western society of conservatism and fear sussed right out. every single song contains masses of heartfelt, sincere emotion, which is passionately expressed through thom yorkes singing and jonny greenwoods guitar. plus they have three guitarists, creating an awesome and unequalled sound. everyone, go and buy OK computer and prepare to be amazed.
