Nationstates is more than two years old now, and I've been here through most of it. I've seen a lot of threads come and go in General, and the one thought I've harbored this entire time is, "Christ, there's a forum that could use some perspective."
I mean, really. Why be racist, nationalist, partisan, or any other kind of elitist? Look at my text and tell me what race I am, where I'm from or what my beliefs are. Your nation isn't better than mine, you're not better than I am, and your beliefs aren't superior to mine. If they were, I wouldn't believe what I do.
I understand that conflict is human nature, and I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. What gets on my nerves is the eternal petty childishness that turns this forum, at times, into a seething den of "am not!" and "are too!".
I realise that many of the topics being discussed are controversial, and that many of you feel deeply about them. I just don't care. Who the fuck made it my business whether or not an unwed mother gets an abortion, or whether two consenting adults choose to do naughty things where it's not going to affect anyone else? I mean, does the phrase "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" mean nothing to some of you? In the same vein, it's none of your concern to take up a banner and wave it in everyone's face. Your defense of the oppressed may be laudable, but it's not a goddamn badge of honor.
