OK, which: The Final Fantasy series or the Zelda series is better? This is not just necasserely the games themselves but spin-offs, merchandise, comics, etc. Personally i'd go for Final Fantasy on game merits, although i've actually not been too involved with Zelda. GO!

Final Fantasy is a bigger franchise, yes.

But (tho I can't put my finger on it) Zelda has something FF doesn't . . .

The Legend of Zelda is an action/platformer series. Final Fantasy is oldschool RPG. There's almost no way to compare between games. You can say you prefer apples over oranges, but saying apples *are better* than oranges is rather meaningless. You can also compare apples against each other for "best apple," because they compete for the same goals, but an orange will never has what makes an apple good, nor vice versa.

Opinions:
Final Fantasy is very good at being an RPG, most of the time.
Legend of Zelda is very good at being an action/platformer, most of the time.

From what I understand, the recent Zelda Games were more RPG than action. Could be wrong tho.

Hmmmm...

Nope, can't decide.

FF has turn-based combat (Con, Burn It With Fire!) and generally good storylines.

LoZ has real-time combat (w00t) and fairly similar plots, which can be handy if you just want to play.

And a Most Honourable Mention goes to Secret of Mana. I know it's not a choice but dammit it's a great game :D

Yeah well i always thought zelda was a rpg but then again i only came up with the story of the game back in '76.

Well, you have a complex tool-collection process... But that's been true since the first Legend of Zelda. The amount you talk to characters has been increased, but you do have little interaction with that part of the game. The graphics are better too, of course, but that isn't an RPG characteristic. Other than that, I believe little has changed in the pure structure of a Zelda game since the beginning of the series. Unless there's something I'm forgetting?

Aye JunNi, but my only encounter with Chrono Trigger has been through ROMs. Great game as it is, it can't compare to renting SOM from my local rental store time and again, to tide me over as I searched for a shop, any shop that still stocked it, all the while hoping that someone hadn't saved over my go

Good times

Ha! yeah and i flew an aeroplane from a big bridge and then crashed it in the middle of nowhere whil fifteen young swedish men looked at me through green goggles and thought about the weather and stamped on my mothers lovely nice new red bicycle and shouted at her for not looking like a persian hamster that was growing in the middle of june but has now stopped because it has to look where its going before it crosses the road. So what i think should happen is that we should all gather round in a big big circle and poop on the nearest stick that we find in the bad forest of alldermock and then think about what we had for breakfast. Then maybe, just maybe we can think baout having our din-dins. I think that the final fantasy series has offered a lot to the individual. The average human spends half his life sleeping while the averahe final fantasy player spends half his life finding marmalade- where did he leave it?
"I dont know"

"but you must! i want it to spread on my toast!"

"Well yah boo and sucks to you!"

BUt that was a whole 'nother story which i will tell you about right now. A long time ago there was a man named Zelda and he fought in a magical kingdom. Of course he was only made of wood at the time but he soon survived. So do you want to come to my tea party on top of another country? I think we could eat cakes and discuss how nice they are? Do you not think that that would be nice?
Lets talk about Zelda: its a nice computer game that took me in the night and hurt me and then jammed up my speakers with a giant fat flummy. If you think im kidding then boy-o are you in trouble!
In conclusion, i beleieve that they are both very good and FF gets 34.78 points and Z get 76.09 points.
Here is a more presentable DATA table of sorts:

Final Fantasy 34.78

Zelda 76.09

Alas, I'm in the UK, and if you could find them, they'd almost certainly be for NTSC SNESs, rather than PAL versions.

Personally I am a big Zelda fan, and I think that, though Final Fantasy does have the better overall extra-gaming merchandise (i.e. toys etc.) Zelda to me is to me the game I would choose. I think what really hurt the Zelda fan-base (well mostly I suppose what one would call "fair-weather" gamers) was the Wind Waker game, which although it was cartoony, it was still a great game if you played through it. But the cool thing about Zelda is that, even though it is the same basic plot, you still have fun every time.
A big con for me for Final Fantasy is the turn based combat, I really cant stand it. NOw if it had a combat system like Kingdom Hearts, you have a new FF convert right here and now. I think someone was right earlier about you not really being able to compare them, but I compare it in this way:
"If you can only get one game for Christmas, which do you get? Final Fantasy or The Legend of Zelda?"
of Course that is assuming you have a ps2 and a gcn. and let's say they released FF: Advent Children and LOZ: (working title)-the one they showed at E3 that filled everyone's heart with joy-at the same time and you could only have one of those games, which do you choose?
There is a way to compare I suppose.

Advent Children is a movie not a game you retard. Anyway link could destroy just about any main FF character in a one on one fight. He would just run them through while they were busy angsting.

I have to say in terms of both storylines and visual/mental aesthetics, Final Fantasy wins. In the Zelda games, from what I've gathered from the 3 different games I've played, you are Link. This never changes. In the Final Fantasy series, the only thing that stays the same is the creator of the game, and sometimes several artists and writers. The characters aren't the same because each FF takes place on a different world. Each storyline adds something new and fantastic, it's an entirely new story to play with your brain. Most are excellent, I've yet to play FF9 all the way through, but those I've played are the best games I've ever played.

I think they both rock. If you compare the originals, the first Legend of Zelda kicked FFI's ass from here to the moon and back again. And then Link to the past rocked the gaming world. But then FF6 shitted some stuff up and reigns supreme as history's best old-school RPG. Then FF7 was revolutionary and wins top spot in most gamers hearts, but Ocarina of Time sat at the top of the charts for an exceptionally long time. If you were to compare latest games though, FFX-2 and FFXI kicked Windwakers ass from here to Mars and back again.

There's my ramblings for this minute.
