Another species to cross off the list - the last Po'o-uli has died in captivity in Hawaii. It's the 14th species of Hawaiian honeycreeper to become extinct, so soon the whole group will be gone.

Not to worry; all this endangered wildlife just gets in the way of the tourists trying to get a suntan, and as long as the native *people* don't die out and can still perform their ritual dance-for-the-gods-and-get-tourist-dollars, no-one's going to complain.

From the article, I almost got the feeling that the bird was on its way towards dying out before we even uncovered it. I mean, it was discovered in 1979, on a fairly populous island. It must have been rare then too.
