Want to see government propaganda in full effect? Here it is. (http://www.authentichistory.com/images/1960s/treasure_chest/cover_01.html)
This is hilarious stuff. It starts with a letter from J. Edgar Hoover (the comic book is from 1961) and then goes into perhaps the most ridiculous red scare tactics imaginable. Here's a brief sample:

And that's a pretty tame sample. Go take a look--you won't regret it.

I saw what you did there...;) Clever...
I dig this stuff. There's an old radio program called "I Was a Communist for the FBI." That has some quality 'commies'....
If you read the old Iron Man comics you see a lot of Communist villians who in the end fail because they back stab each other...which is an interesting criticism to make.....
If you pick up the Kronos Quartet's Howl, U.S.A. you get Sing, Sing:J. Edgar Hoover which uses clips from the radio drama This is Your FBI.
Hehe, nice find! The blatant framing of capitalism versus communism as being God versus Atheism was a nice trick. If anything, those red-scare nuts should have been arguing against authoritarianism, which can exist quite easily without communism (Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy).

Well, you see, you've got to be careful on talking down authoritarianism when you're trying to reach "godly people" because let's be frank here--God's the biggest authoritarian there is.

How true!

This is just an extension of McCarthyism, of course...just like Captain America was fighting Nazis, to enforce patriotism.
Do you blame these people? After world war 2, America was fragile in a sense, and they could not afford to have an uprising in their own ranks damaging their own morale. Look what happened to Russia and China...communism has not proven itself in the past, and all this talk about perfect communism comes to nothing because it deals solely in theory. In theory any system of government works, even totalitarianism, but thus far, I believe that democracy is the leader.
These comic books kept youth away from communism...good.

You act like communism is heroin or crack. It's just an economic system--a pretty flawed one in my book, but just an economic system nonetheless, and certainly nothing like these "comic books" make it out to be. Guess the propaganda worked after all--on you.

I notice that there are no ethnic minorities in the USSA either.

Quite the contrary, I was too young to experience any sort of anti-communism propoganda. But, having done my research, I know the dangers of an uneducated youth jumping into a system that seems like a safe haven, when indeed, it is very flawed, like you said...not to mention dangerous.
Though it is not as bad as the comic books portrayed, it is short of perfect by a considerable amount, and there is no need to stray away from democracy for the spectre of a failed system.

Here's the real problem--you think communism is a political system. It isn't--it's an economic one. It's perfectly possible for a country to be a communistic democracy, just as it's possible for a capitalistic dictatorship to exist. You've been trained by government propaganda and popular culture to think that communism necessarily equates with totalitarianism, when it's simply not the case. This is an excellent example of why word usage is so important, and why sloppy use of language is dangerous.

What about the point that economic freedoms are a pre-condition to a fully deliberative democracy though?

I did not look (and will not, referred sites are dangerous these days). Can you type something meaningful to discuss (that does not "require" the crutch-site)?
correct me if i'm wrong: but didn't the russians go into ww2 with the germans and fight alongside them until the germans turned on them.
at which point the russians thoroughly kicked their asses. though the russian winter had a lot to do with that.

No, there was just a non-agression pact that allowed the two powers to partition Poland, the molotov-ribbentrop pact was not an actual alliance, so the Russians never actually fought with the germans.
This is why the Western allies were able to declare war on Germany without having to also declare war on the USSR.

Your wrong...slightly
the USSR (not Russia damnit) or more specifically Stalin and Molotov signed a non-aggression treaty with Nazi Germany, and didn't do any fighting against anyone excluding Finland in a sideshow of the war which doesn't really count (unless you were one of the people who died). But yes in 1941 Germany invaded the USSR, and bu 1945 the Soviets were raping Berlin

The irony is that communism is against the 'Social Darwinism' thing that so many Christians claim atheists live by... while Jesus was rather communistic.

And the fact that so many christian communes have existed over the course of history should suggest the validity of my system.
Do you want to know where Communism could not work? Anywhere that believes that capitalism is the "end all be all", I.E. the USA. Everywhere else is up for grabs. Damn, you should have seen how well it was doing in Chile prior to the US backed coup, or in the Congo, before the US installed that other dictator, or in Vietnam, prior to the US destroying the country, or, Hey! Could there be some sort of a connection here? Could any of the failures of small scale communist countries be the fault of the United States? let's steer discussion in that direction.

Gotta love the unintentional irony on p31:
"We Catholics know that no ideas are forced on our minds. God has given us a mind with which we make free choices every day. The kind of choices which will decide whether we go to heaven or hell..."

At the end of chapter one I was ready to conclude that this comic may very well be the finest creation of the capitalist and representative system. The story of Marx's life was so much funnier.
This is unreasonably good.

I preferred the bit about young Karl Marx.
"Good, he doesn't believe in free will."
