1. Half Life 2 - Hands down, the best game I have ever played.
2. Age of Empires II: The Conquerers - years on, I still have urges to play this online. Fantastic strategy, great dedicated community of online gamers. Remains very active despite it's age.
3. Imperium Galactica - No multiplayer, runs in DOS, centuries old. Fantastic, innovative space-RTS.
4. Max Payne 2 - Ooooohhhh, noir.
5. Chris Sawyer's Transport Sycoon Deluxe - Yay empire building.

Balance of Power (1990 ed) - Old. Very old. But this kind of game just isn't made anymore.

Wasteland (1987) - Post nuke RPG set in and around Los Vegas. Not only classic, but nearly infinitely replayable. I've solved it at least 50 times now. And I'm STILL finding little "in jokes" and secrets an 8-bit game.

The Civilization series by Sid Meyer - When I got the first Civ game, I loaded it at 5.30pm and only turned it off at 7am the next morning to go to Calculus.

Pool of Radiance (NOT Myth Dranor!!) - The original game from SSI. Lovingly remade as a module in my last choice: NWN. If you own NWN, you MUST download and play this module!!

Neverwinter Nights (NWN) - It's graphics are nothing against City of Heroes. But the scope and depth and number of modules and customability of this game makes it the BOMB.

I'd also give shout outs to Legacy of the Ancients, Bard's Tale (esp.2), Missile Command, Battlezone, Jedi Knight & Jedi Knight 2, and Panzer General.

roommates XBox has Halo 2 in it (so does this)
Playstation 2 has San Andreas in it (good, but not the best)
Game Boy Color has Tetris in it (best of all time, I'd say)

In no particular order, because I've downed about a dozen drinks in the past hour and should, loghically, be dead, and With explainations, because I'm me. (I made a pun, see? I'm celebratiing finally getting my computer to work after a hard-drive failure and discovering that the recovery disks sent by the supplier were for a model that didn't actually exist.) Stream-of-conciousness writing and references to obscure books may follow.

Breath of Fire 1: The scenes with the King Giant and Alan/Cerl touched and effected me in ways nothing in any other game ever have. The rest of the game ranges from average to entertaining, but these two scenes, in themselves, are comparable to any other complete game in terms of emotional depth and appeal, almost. plus, there's the world-map music from the time of that scene until you get Gobi. Or, it might have just been because I was about 12.

Final Fantasy 6: Yes, there's the old "Have 20 characters so each can have 1 deep experience and seem somplete" shtick, and making anyone capable of learning the ultimate spell, but you've got to admit that you didn't notice this while playing, and you'll probably admit that you noticed it the second or third time through. Meaning, it at first appeared deep enought that you played it two or three times. And, the combat was east and badass, the displays were probably the best of SNES, and the music rocked in a way unrivaled by anything outside of the Lufia series, especially the original. And, it's got BumRush. Phear.

Chrono Trigger: I replayed this lord-knows how many times. A unique combat system that's actually good (probably the best I've ever played, in fact), many scenes that actually made me think, the relationship with Marle, the secret ending where Chrono actually talks, so many abilities and a near-endless replay value, and the main character is disturbingly useful in any situation.

Scorched Earth clones, especially Blast Doors (available from ffiends.com) I'm a not-so-close, personal friend of Fred Haslam, the programmer to Sium City 2000/ Dragon Court. PLus, it's got the Warthog. If you've gotten that far,
'nuf said.

Popful Mail: Probably my favorite game of all time. If it had been for any system but the hopelessly doomed SegaCD, it'd have achieved international renown. Sven T. Uncommon is the best villain videogaming has ever seen, and (if your memory of topical humor remembers 1994), the Mine stage is the zenith of gaming of all time, no arguements valid. It's alos fun to play, and the jumping puzzles are all skipable with Gaw until the end, where you absolutely _need_ to use the main character if you want to stand a chance. Ruined only by three incredibly easy final boss battles and there being one pixel in The Final Sven battle where you can stand to make it only hard instead of almost impossible. go to the-Underdogs.org and download immediately. It may take a few hours to set up a SegaCD emulator, but it's worth it.

Honorabel mention- Lunar Series- because it had great music and touching sortylines where I almost actgually cared fro tha characters at the end. And the SegaCD EternalBlue's Althena-Zophar battle, being a story-battle that nearly whooped me, followed by and Omni-Zophar that was cake-and-pie by comparison.

5. Chrono Trigger, followed very closely by Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy 3/6, and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Edit: And I totally ignored arcades; if those count, DDR is definitely up there somewhere. (Yeah, I know it's on consoles, but it's not the same without the arcade machine in front of you and its metal pads under your feet)

Final Fantasy VI
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Sims

...and Brave Fencer Musashi, thrown in for good measure. ;) Okay, it's not the best game in the world by far but for me it has nostalgic and humor value that gives it a place on my list.

I'm too tired to think of another one, so I'm saying Super Metroid for now.. I'm sure there is a game I like better, though. Maybe a racing game like Top Gear... another one for nostalgia. Ah I love racing games, for some reason..

1.) Sims 2 (PC) The only game I've ever stayed up till 4 o'clock playing
2.) Baldur's Gate 2 (PC) The best CRPG ever. EVER!
3.) Planescape: Torment (PC) Interface and Graphics put this wonder below BG2, but the storyline and immersion are amazing.
4.) Tropico (PC) Controlling little people on a beautiful Carribbean island, balancing the economy with political agenda, all to the sound of a brillian soundtrack, what's not to like?
5.) Civilisation 3 (PC) A vast improvement over the already addictive 2nd one.

Honorable mentions-
Rome: Total War (PC)- Amazing Game, but very taxing.
Rollercoaster Tycoon (PC)- Bless it, much fun.
Icewind Dale 2 (PC) So close to the top 5.
Call of Duty (PC) So much fun to explode Nazis occasionally.
.Hack//Infection (PS2) Played at a friends house, suddenly I have an urge to buy a PS2.

Dishonorable mentions-
Dungeon Seige (PC) Where it exists, the plot is pathetic and makes no sense.
Big Rigs:Over the Road Racing (PC) Never played it, but this (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/driving/bigrigsotrr/review.html) is so funny.

Most of my favourite games have been mentioned many times over in this thread (Metroid Prime, Sims, Age of Empires, Perfect Dark, etc), so I'll just mention the two Deus Ex games.

The original Deus Ex has dated a little. It's graphics are pretty shite and I don't particularly like playing the singleplayer anymore. However, it still has an absolutely fantastic multiplayer mode because you can use biomods.

Deus Ex: Invisible War doesn't have a multiplayer (sadly) but it has possibly the best singleplayer that I have ever played.

I've also got to mention C&C Renegade, because it's got such a brilliant team based multiplayer mode. You don't just run around shooting everyone, you've got to work with your team to attack the enemy base and defend yours.

Contra
MGS
Yuri's Revenge
Legend of Zelda OoT
Super Mario All-Stars
Oh come on, people. Everyone know NES Contra is up there. Red Alert 2 kicks ass as well, but was totally eclipsed by its expansion pack. I think Metal Gear Solid was way better than Metal Gear Solid 2. Hopefully MGS3 is better. Zelda is the best game franchise of all time, but OoT simply shines as the best. Also, I don't know why anyone would bother to think about picking which Mario game was best, since they can get all of the NES marios on one game without choosing, and on a more reliable system-SNES.
