Worst Hollywoodisations of Decent Flicks

Yes, Yes. Prompted by the other threads of similar topics. :D

Now, to business. The two worst remakes I've seen in the last few years were The Ring (Japanese = Scary and Hollywood = Boring) and The Vanishing, in which the whole movie was undermined by a bullshit rewrite of the ending so the "good guys" were saved and lived happily ever after. Puh-lease! :mp5:

Any other suggestions?

Oh, they will. It looks like it's going to be an action movie, with much shooting and dodging of lightning.

I agree w/ the vanishings but disagree w/ the Ring. I enjoyed the U.S. version better than the original.

Get Carter 2000 & The Italian Job

Two films that were a great big sack of crap.

The Italian Job cannot be properly called a remake. I would have to suggest the remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that is coming out. It will probably be a well made movie, given that the combination of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp has yet to really fail, but there is little doubt it will suck as a remake.

The Ring (remake) was boring but of course it was as I had seen the original ones. I did enjoy Abre los ojos better than Vanilla Sky, maybe because I don't like Tom Cruise. Insomia was actually better than the original version (Norweigian).
Haven't seen the Grudge yet (seen 2 of the originals)
And still waiting to see a hollywood version of Battle Royale :D

I would assume that the original was better than this one. It just plain sucked.

Of course. No contest. Please. Can there be any doubt?

Compared to where they nicked the idea from, The Seven Samurai, its Hollywood remake, The Magnificent Seven was not as good, but it is still one of the best westerns ever.

It had Meg Ryan in it. Her sappy to non-sappy movie ratio is extremely unbalanced.

Come on, how accurate could they possibly make it? One has to do with Saumrai in feudal Japan, one with cowboys in the wild west. I think we should be happy that it was at least a good movie.

*smack*

dont any of you READ?

charlie and the chocolate factory is the name of the BOOK written by roald dahl that the movie was made from

the movie was very good in its bringing the world of the chocolate factory to life but it did play a bit loose with the details of CHARLIE (the hero of the book) that annoyed me.

im willing to give it. a try the creative team is excellent so they have a shot at doing something good with it.

Can you really call it a remake when it follows the story closer then the original?

Few people know that it is a dark story.....

Actually it follows the story as Raul Daul intended.

Daul did not like the movie one bit and he and then his wife prevented anybody from remaking it till now. Burten presented a script that is more true to the book and she blessed the production.

now i'm excited. burton knows how to make a movie and if the wife liked the script it could really be GOOD

La Cage Aux Folles (And even La Cage Aux Folles II, but not III) was a Helluva lot funnier than The Birdcage. Even if it was subtitled.

Gotta disagree with you here. I saw The Ring, then the Japanese original a few months later. I think the American version conencted the clues better. The Japanese one seemed to jump to conclusions to quickly. Jap version had a creepier ending though.

You seem to have a keyboard problem. You're producing the letter s whenever you type c and r.

Has anyone else seen the 1999 TNT remake of Animal Farm, with Babe-style animatronic animals? I won't say just how terrible it is, I fear for my spleen, but sufficed to say that in the end the animals have a revolution, discover the joys of capitalism and live happily ever after.

Oh, and WTF is Raul Daul?

Erm, really don't know if I should do this but it's Roald Dahl.

I absolutely loved his books as a kid, BTW, and IMHO any film that tries to return to the feel of the books rather than turning it into a (*spits*) musical is to be welcomed.

Sorry little sleep. Insomnia problem.....

That sucks. I've had it a few times. I get permanently irritated by little things, have no patience with people and nothing makes sense. So it's pretty much just like every day but a bit weirder.

I have to agree about 'Wings of Desire'/'City of Angels'. The first was a superb movie which will move you and leave a lump in your throat. The second will only manage to move your stomach contents and the lump in your throat is most likely your lunch.

Pretty much any French comedy ('3 men and a cradle' for eg.). Hollywood just doesn't understand subtlety or sophisication. I mean they can even screw up 'Taxi' which is unsubtle and unsophisicated anyway.

And what about 'Priscilla' and what was it called? 'To Fong, with love' or some shite like that? (not worth my time to google it sorry) First one passable. 2nd one unwatchable.

I don't think you can really mention 'The Magnificent Seven' as a true remake, as they made enough changes for it to stand alone. A remake IMO is just using American actors and reshooting it pretty much scene for scene, except of course totally f**king up the ending. As usual.

- They sure do. BTW, why does everyone assume the French like Jerry Lewis? Where did that old chestnut come from? I've never met a Frenchman who'd even heard of Jerry Lewis save for this bizarre assertion that they worship his old films.

- I believe that'd be 'To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar'. I didn't bother googling it, either, so I may have misplaced a comma or two. The sole redeeming quality of that film was to provide Julie Newmar with an excuse to appear onscreen. Even at her advanced age, Ms. Newmar has a body most humans would find incredibly appealing. Apart from those few fleeting moments at the end of the film, this redux of 'Priscilla' is utterly pointless. Even a cameo by Robin Williams falls as flat as pancakes on linoleum tile.

How 'bout the 'new' Shining? The first one, with Jack Nicholson, was almost as sinister as the book. The recent one just sucks. It doesn't even rely on loud noises and eerie music in an attempt to frighten the audience. I'd rather watch the Simpsons version of the thing.

And then, there is the remake of Psycho, with Anne Heche. I'd kill her too, for all the orange she wore. What a pathetic attempt at reproducing a classic.
