AIDS in Africa
So considering some countries in Africa have 30-50% of their populations infected with HIV, and anti-retroviral drugs only keep you alive temporarily, what's going to happen when those people start dying off at massive rates?

You said it yourself, it's called dieoff. Those countries are already starting to cease functioning as such.
So can a country keep it together with the loss of over one third of the population? Can a country in that situation keep any semblance of order, or economic stability?

Of course not. Look at Africa now. Entire sections of the continent, judging by the demographics, are finished.

They are FUcked Beyond Any Reasonability. In 20 years, the life expectancy of South Africa, the welthiest african country, will go down to 40 years. Its like the plague down there. They are poor, and they will die in massive amounts. Economically.. well, i've read somewhere that mining companies are already introducing machinery that reduces dependance on manpower.. because their ranks are getting hit by AIDS. Those countries won't go bankrupt, since no one will spend money trying to help them, and no unrest will ensue, since people with aids don't got the strengh to rebel. So, they are FUBAR.

Expectations for Africa are that it's population will exceed 3 billion by 2050. Some 25 million have the HIV virus. When they die it will quit possibly effect the countries with the highest HIV percentage. But as a hole Africa will stay pretty much the same as it is now I believe.

the death of adults is only the start of the problem
africa is raising an entire generation of aids orphans in substandard orphanages. no matter how much they WANT to do right by these kids, they just don't have the resources to do so. remember the pictures of the romanian orphans banging their heads against the rails of their cribs? africa has millions of orphans being raised like that.
what happens when these children raised without family without caring without love become adults?
millions of sociopaths, hundreds of thousands of psychopaths, kids raised with no connection to society.
i dont know what can be done, but if we dont start, there will be hell to pay.

We could recolonise them. :D For their own good of course.

Africa has been written off by the UN as far as AIDS goes.

I think that one of the worst things about HIV in Africa is the folk myth that having sex with a virgin will cure the virus. Rape victims are getting younger and younger. :(

It is going to stay the same, since people will continue to have sex, and spread the virus. And when large amounts of Africans begin dying off, it won't be too different than before. It is a cynical view and I hate it, but I really don't think much can be done about it yet.
