Patton as General of the Army?

I've decided to put a sticky question that I have been adament about for a while: Should George S. Patton Jr. been promoted to General of the Army. While good men were chosen for the rank, Patton, being the best field commander the Allies ever had, should have been honored for his accomplishments. But I suppose the Pentagon, as well as arm-chair politicans, had something to do about it.

He was a good tank commander. But Ike did a good job. Montgomery also deserves a mention.
Ve von the war!

I do not doubt that Ike and Monty were great generals in their own right, but they were both rewarded for their efforts: Ike as GoA, and Monty as F.M. Patton only got 4 stars, despite taking North Africa (I know someone will say it was too easy), Sicily, and Southern France, not to mention took the first Bridgehead over the Rhine, and completed one of the best manouvers at the Battle of the Bulge.

That's the way the cookie crumbled. Ja. Not much fun in Stalingrad, no.

Stalingrad could have been won, but Hitler wanted to have a grand last stand, hoping for victory. Uncle Adolf should have listened to history. But we'll never no for sure.

He didn't exactly take North Africa. There is a bit more to it than that.
Same for Scicily.
Also he had the bad habit of stealing supplies that were headed for other armies to supply his own. (which is a bad thing to do).
He was a great field commander though.
In any event, being as I subscribe to the theory that he was assasinated by his own side, I somehow doubt he would have been given the fifth star.
I thought they stopped giving it after bradley anyway.

They didn't stop it, its inactive as of 1982. As for Sicily, & N. Africa, I understand there was mor to it, but as for his fronts, he did his share. Plus, I'm not asking would he have gotten it, but should he.

Probably no, because he never really had any overall commands like Ike or Brad.
He was always just a field commander and had gone as high as he could go once the war was over, so there were just to many people ahead of him.
