im wondering how many people out there can actually put their hand up and say "im happy" - not just right now but generally, reflecting on your life in general.

Happiness is a choice you can make irrespective of circumstances.

Well, I'm 61 now and I can honestly say that I've been through seven different kinds of hell and 1/2 of Georgia in my life, but I voted "yes" because I've learned that happiness, like love, is a decision you make and not something outside you which controls you without any volition on your part.

"Happiness" is an over-used term. I feel that there are few people who are genuinely happy. Also however very few people are genuinely unhappy. There is the vast majority of people in between who have what is called "contentment". This is the group of people who are overall happy with life but who wouldn't mind a new car, job or a nice holiday etc.

"Contentment" is much more common than "happiness".

Why settle? Determining your own happiness does not depend upon how much money you make, or whether you have a new car, or a better job, or whether you can take a holiday or not.

I got too busy to be introspective anymore and one day I woke up and thought "wow, I'm happy, when did that happen?". Fortunately I was too busy to think about it to much and before long I forgot to be suprised about it.

And if your plan falls through??

The beauty of my plans is they are simple, very small scale, and nuemerous. I don't have deluded grand plans such as 'write a best selling novel' or 'get a date with Miss. X', I have simpler short term goals such as catching up with old friends, trying new things, and run a half marathon (which I am training for just now).

I read from somewhere, someone said that

"Happiness is based on control". The more control you have of your life, the more happy you are.

If your life is spinning out of control, exp: Your grades are dropping, your parents are fighting, your sister is hitting, your GF is cheating.

Your most likely not going to be happy.

Nobody can trully be absolutely happy.

----------------------------------------------

As for me, I'm relatively happy, though my life is taking a new turn with uni decisions, plus financial uncertainties with parents deeply in debt from a failed business.

I'm not in control with most of my future, but hey, I'm at least happy that I got a roof, nice bed to sleep on, and I'm healthy as an ox. And with my beliefs that 'God is in total control'. I have to say i'm happy.

*Though I accidentally voted for 'no', which I can't redo. I'm not happy about that*

There are a great deal of people, myself included, who seem to enjoy the struggle caused by being out of control. It isn't intentional for the most part.

It has a great deal to do with procrastination, and is a subconscious reaction to the rush a person feels with solving problems.

These individuals will always be putting themselves in problematic situations and probably are never satisfied with their present situations. They are bored when things are good, and generally unhappy when things are interesting. So in effect are never really truely happy.

I haven't been unhappy for years, whenever something happens that might make me unhappy then I just think, "Hey doesn't bother me what they think, just as long as they say it behind my back. Then ill get them back later in life."

Don't worry, be happy.

I'm always happy, :). Even when I'm stressed or sick, or I've had a bad day at work. I realize that I have a great life, and don't let the little things get me down (or the big things for that matter). I figure if I'm happy then maybe it will be contagious, and the next person I meet might have a better day! And I totally disagree with you Tuesday Heights, lots of people can be truly happy, if you know what you want, and you actually try and get/do the things that make you happy, then you CAN be truly happy.
