This influx of rookies is larger than most others I've seen. I don't know what happened but I have a feeling we were /.'ed.

And for those of us who don't know what slash-dotting is?

I'd say it all depends on what the hell slash-dotting means.

/.'ing is when a website is posted on slashdot.org. If these websites have forums the forums are usally flooded with rookies.

Well, I think I'd fall into your newbie definition. And I've never heard of slashdot.org. A freind of mine told me about this site, I saw the forums, read some discussions I liked, and joined in.

I also happen to be a forum administrator on one of the largest NFS related web sites on the internet, so I'm not exactly new to this stuff.

But yea, a freind gave me the addy. Perhaps that's how the influx of us newbies came?

Yes but now that we aren't we've got to pick on the current ones. Besides, I've not even been here a year but certanly don't consider myself "new" to this.

/.ing is when a link is placed on a SlashDot forum and so many people click on it, it clogs the server that hosts the outside site, making it unaccessable. Efficient way to use up all your monthly bandwidth.

That'll do it, all right! I know that Fark's a large site, so...

Then again, where I come from, we have our own term for when we bring down sites... even though it's a small forum...

What if I am hosted on a server that has a 45 mbps line with no limit on monthly bandwidth :)

Nationstates has been commented on many times on the Slashdot site - I don't think mentioning it now would make much of a difference to how many people join.

As I recall though, there was a blip after NS got mentioned on the BBC Radio 2 programme Drive Time, as an example of so-called "sticky sites" that encourage you to go back and visit them again and again.

Then depending on what you are hosting, you are still in deep. Slashdot is a rather big site, and many people read it. Being slashdotted can put as much load on your network as a DDoS* attack. That's because that's effectively what it is.
