Ten Commandments

Yes this is yet another religious thread. Of all the commandments, which one do you think is the most important?

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

1 I am the Lord thy God who have brought thee out of the house of bondage.
I am the Lord thy God and thou shalt not have any strange gods before me.
I am the Lord thy God and thou shalt not have other gods besides me.

2 Thou shalt have no other gods besides me. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Thou shalt not make for thyself any graven image.
3 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4 Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. Honor thy Father and Mother. Remember the Lord's Day to keep it holy.
5 Honor thy Father and Mother. Thou shalt not kill. Honor thy Father and Mother.
6 Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill.
7 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8 Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not steal.
9 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10 Thou shalt not covet. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods. Thou shalt not covet.

My choice is number 10 (followed closely by number 5) for the following reasons: Each and everyday we all feel the urge for material goods, and as such we occasionally look with envy at our neighbors and wish we could have what they have like an attractive young wife, new car, a perfect lawn, etc. I'm sure most people in todays world is quilty of greed and envy, afterall we are only ordinary men. I think that this is the most important commandment as if you fall into the "covet" trap you are at risk of basically braking all the rest of the commandments.

Obviously, hold no other Gods before me. It is the first one, and the only way to get into heaven. You can break all the others but as long as you believe in God you get into heaven.

28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[5] 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'[6] 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[7] There is no commandment greater than these."
32"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions

That may not be true though. You can believe in God all you want, but if you start to covet things like money (which if you let it run your life then it is your God) you do not follow His word and let greed and envy rule your life, they are your God.

If you follow the Christian beliefs and you commit all of those sins but believe in Him and still continue to sin, you will not be going to heaven. You have to honestly try to change your ways and be truely sorry for what you have done and what you will do.

The kinda christian and moral part of me however likes number seven.

I don't really consider obedience to God bondage. Simply because of the fact that you have the choice. He doesn't force his will on you. Ask a slave from way back when if they really had a choice. Even when you follow the teachings, you are not bound to stay with it.

you should remember that Jesus was super crafty and never would give a straight answer. Considering that he would always use parables and whatnaut to teach his followers. Personally I think his greatest apostle, John, got most of what Jesus said more correct. But yes the first is a great commandment, but people are stupid and let desires rule their lives thus turning other things into God.

John baptised Jesus, no? Well I always considered John the greatest as his execution (as he being a righteous man) caused the fall of Herrod.

So in reality, you are dooming over 80% of the world's population into hell. Excellent, so should we grovel and give virgin sacrifices too? Don't forget everyone, as long as you believe in "god" you can commit acts of murder and you will always be forgiven. PRAISE THE LORD FOR HIS PEOPLE ARE STUPID!!

1.Thou shall not have another dictator besides me.

2.Thou shall pay your taxes.

3.Thou shall obey me without complaints.

4.Thou shall not fool your fellow slave of mine.

5.Thou must defend my throne with your life if needed.

In fact 80% are doom to hell. It does say in the Bible that Christians will take the path less travel showing us that the majority will go to hell. The whole point of Christ being crucified on the cross was so that we didnt have to sacrifice ppl.

Anyway most important two are love God and love your neighbors. If you love God you would not commits sins against him and thus go to heaven, and if you love your neighbor as yourself then well the world would be perfect...

I find it stupid that you need the 10 commandments to tell you how to live your life. Obviously, common sense isn't a part of the 10 commandments.

How about this for a good commandment?

1. "Treat others as you want to be treated by them."

or how about this one?

1. "Be happy, but be wary not to hurt others in the process."

Obviously, common sense is ignored by most religions. If you need something to tell you how to live your life, then you are nothing more than a slave.

In fact 80% are doom to hell. It does say in the Bible that Christians will take the path less travel showing us that the majority will go to hell. The whole point of Christ being crucified on the cross was so that we didnt have to sacrifice ppl.

Ah yes, the old "everyone is going to hell except for me" reasoning. What makes you think you're right? Do you think you're part of the elite? Chrisians/catholics have been acting superior all their life, thinking that their way is the only way and everyone else is wrong. They spout "moral" ideals yet they promote intollerance and hatred.

Good points. I was being a little silly when making this thread as all of them are important, but I still feel that if you break number 10 you will break every other one. But that's my opinion (and you know what they say about opinions).

BTW Opinions are like cowboy hats, pretty soon every asshole (me especially) has one.

Obviously, hold no other Gods before me. It is the first one, and the only way to get into heaven. You can break all the others but as long as you believe in God you get into heaven.

The only sin that was stated to be unforgivable was blasphemy against the Holy Spirt.

"And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

As the Holy Spirit is the immanent part of the Trinity which permeates this world and connects all things in a Unity with God and is the medium through which Grace is transmitted, hatred, or a denial of brotherhood with all could theoretically be considered blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. So Love is the greatest of all commandments.

When it comes down to the Ten, I would think that "Thou shall not kill" would be the most important one. Since man is not able to judge the state of another's soul, killing someone and thus possibly causing them to suffer damnation (ie, be removed from the presence of God or taken out of the Body which is joined by the Holy Spirit) would be the one most likely to count as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

(I've studied the bible but I have never been Christian, so this answer is less than authoritative).

4th for sure, the 4th commandment is the one that most explicitly disqualifies the ten commandments from display in public buildings or schools, because it is extremely religion-specific and constitutes a clear and direct establishment of judeo-christianity.

If you want to understand this verse, you must know the age of Jesus. What you said about periphrastic speach is much more true about pharisees than about Christ. Pharisees always tried to think out a question with no good answer to it, but when they asked Jesus, he always had a perfect question. Why? Because when both 'yes' and 'no' are bad answers for peolple, there is a third one which has the light of God's wisdom.
This is the only story (or maybe there is another one) when a pharisee really wanted to know what Jesus thought about something, without ulterior motive. Jesus knew it very well, so he gave a very STRAIGHT answer: love God and love people. This was the best possible answer to a man who can't find the way to God among hundreds of rules. If we make many rules again insted of obey those two, we are as fools as pharisee were.

the idea of having ten together like that was to show they are all of equal imporance, and that u cant argue with any of them so why ennumerate. But that being said #1 as it is the basis for religion
Peregrini

I'd say all of them are equally important...

"For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking it all. For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker." James 2:10-11

The thing of the matter is, the Law of the Covenant is just one law and the Ten Commandments are just ten bullets in it, as it were.

6 Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill.
7 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8 Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not steal.
9 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10 Thou shalt not covet. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods. Thou shalt not covet. Those are not the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are these:

1) You shall worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

2) Don’t make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, lest they play the prostitute after their gods, and sacrifice to their gods, and one call you and you eat of his sacrifice; and you take of their daughters to your sons, and their daughters play the prostitute after their gods, and make your sons play the prostitute after their gods.

3) You shall make no cast idols for yourselves.

4) You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt.

5) All that opens the womb is mine; and all your livestock that is male, the firstborn of cow and sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb: and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. No one shall appear before me empty.

6) Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest: in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.

7) You shall observe the feast of weeks with the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of harvest at the year’s end. Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel. For I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither shall any man desire your land when you go up to appear before the LORD, your God, three times in the year.

8) You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be left to the morning.

9) You shall bring the first of the first fruits of your ground to the house of the LORD your God.

10) You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.
