you know the more i have been lookin around on these forums the more i realize that arguing about religion, politics, and other such endless topics, is POINTLESS, it is a never ending cycle, everyone has their beliefs and points of views but it is just dumb cycle, anyone can see good or bad in any topic or idea presented, i must confess i enjoy debating politics and what not , but religion it comes down to your belief system, so you believe what you want and i will believe what i want, but if on the topic of religion don't bash it that is just ignorant, that is one topic that no one can win because it is a matter of beliefs, the more you tell someone that what they believe is wrong the more it pisses people off, maybe i am takin a simplistic approach to this but somethings need to be simple and in my opinion this is one of them

Playing Nation-States is pretty pointless, too, so why do you do it?

Because it's ENTERTAINING.

Same reason why a lot of people debate.

Amen to that. I'm all for debating other things: Homeric Epics anyone? How about Nietzche? All in fun, of course.
Now someone PLEASE look at my Jesus-Stick thread! It's completely non-political.

These online forums provide a medium to say things you'd not be saying in public as governments are increasingly playing God with our freedom of expression. While those who live in "democracies" might find this moot point, some who live in far more autocratic states will see the point.

I think that, when being honest with oneself, most of the people who argue and debate those kinds of never-ending topics realize that they'll never really change anyone's mind...

However, I believe that the "thrill" in it isn't in the end result, it's in the fight itself... So it really doesn't matter that I'll never convince a Christian that God doesn't exist (in my opinion)... Trying to do so is enough to make it worthwhile...

Why is that? Well, partly because arguing is just fun sometimes... It might be one of those intrinsic human qualities...

Another major draw is that the human mind always desires to grow... Well, you can't do that if you only talk to yourself, or to people who agree with every word you say... If the same idea is just passed back and forth, then nothing new is ever added to the proverbial table... I mean, it's like "preaching to the choir"...

But, when you've got an opposing viewpoint, you can use that to not only gain more knowledge of the situation, but to better refine your own stance in the process... "Know thine enemy" and all that...

After all, you don't have to change your mind, but you can alter it to better combat the opposing view, and to just in general become less ignorant of that opposing view... It makes your own position stronger...

So yeah, in the end, you're really not getting anywhere if you think the goal is to convince someone that they're wrong (at least, not when dealing with such strong convictions as those that surround these sorts of topics), but when you realize that the goal is to expand your own views, and exercise your brain, then you realize that you really are getting a lot done...

With all of that said, though, I have to agree that bashing the opposing view is not the way to go... It's about as closed-minded as you can get... I mean, it takes absolutely no mental power to just say "You're wrong, because that's stupid!" But it does take mental power to say, "You're wrong, and here's why I think so..."

The point of arguing politics is because while the other person won't change their views, you can at least make them doubt themselves on some points.

Aside from that, you can't really have political discussions with people who have the exact same beliefs because the whole conversation will be the two of you going "yup... uh huh... totally... I agree...". Therefore, if you want to discuss politics you're going to need people who disagree with you AND people who agree with you.

i do like a good argument just as much as the next guy but god is not an argument, there is thousands of reasons on each side for and against, but in the end it just creates alot of tension, but politics, sure it creats tension but it is a topic that has somthin solid to back up its claims

solid as in facts to back up a point, and in comparision to the issue of religion, politics has a much more solid foundation

No, politics has a pretty weak foundation in lying and treachery too. Religion is based on myth, politics is based on greed. Though I won't deny that political debates--or arguments if you will--are more worthwhile than religious ones. And if you don't like reading redundant sundry discussions on myriad things...then don't.

Republic, actually. The Confederation/Federation situation was ended when the despot Lincoln quashed the rights of the States.
