Kinda like "Thatcher to face trial", the headline that every British editor only dreams of writing. :p

The article mentioned something about this being in response to "protectionist legislation" - protectionist legistlation favoring which countries though?

What exports? We don't make anything ourselves! We make children in Mexico and Asia do it for next to nothing!

It won't be big, as it is just $150 million worth. Compare that to $600 billion for our total annual exports. But I'd just repeal that damn law. It was written by Robert Byrd, anyhow.

Who do these people think they are? We should put sanctions on them :) And kick the UN out of the US because I dont like them (even though they have nothing to do with this)

I just read the story, and the sanctions are in retaliation for the US steel tariff. I think the US has a right to put a tariff on anything that it needs to. Its like saying we are going to punish you now because you want to shop at Wal-mart now instead of K-Mart, or because you want Burger King more than McDonalds, so you go to Burger King. Thats the EU for you. No wonder nobody likes them.

Actually they could do it on other things look at the link Myrth gives
and
The $150m (£79m) in fines against the US could be imposed in early 2005.
Canada, which along with Brazil, South Korea, India, Mexico and Chile is involved in the complaint, said it was studying what it might impose sanctions on.

No. The steel tariffs were another thing. There were sanctions imposed on the US for illegally imposing tariffs on imported steel so that their own companies would have less competition. Bush backed down to keep the US from losing over US$2 bn in business.

According to WTO rules, that the US signed and approved, no country has the right to unilateraly lift tariffs to protect it's own industries. Companies around the world should all compete with the least amount of government intervention. They also should follow some rules, like not selling stuff overseas for less than they charge at home, that's called dumping.

If a domestic company suspects that a foreign company is dumping their products to take over some industry, that company can complain to their government and take the case to the WTO and impose compensatory tariffs to level the field and protect the industry. However, the US recently passed a law that would give whatever is collected by the compensatory tariffs to the complaining companies, in effect subsidizing them and serving as incentive for companies to file bogus complains that could take years to resolve.

The EU and other countries complained of unfariness and the WTO agreed. This means that the complaining countries can now apply their own tariffs to US products. US$150 million is the starting amount, this will hurt certain very specific sectors, and it can go higher if the US refuses to back down.

There are many complains going back and forth at any one time, but it usually involved only very specific sectors and products. This one is more relevant because it's broader and has the potential to become a very big thing.

Seriously, who cares if we lose out on mobile home exports?

This isn't the huge travesty you guys seem to think it is, we're just going to go "Oh well" as we always do.

Besides, the WTO can piss around all it wants, when it comes down to it, if the people want American goods, the governments are going to have to oblige.

Bush is a liberal, and so is the bulk of the Republican party. After all, they're always talking about trade and market liberalization, aren't they? :p

No, less protectionism means more trade.

I think the US has a right to put a tariff on anything that it needs to.Fair enough, but given that the US frequently calls for other countries to reduce or completely abolish their own tariffs it's just a wee bit hypocritical, don't you think??

Sure they do. And everyone has the right to put tariffs on every US product they need to.
And shopping at Walamrt should be penalised.

Individuals persons should be able to slap tariffs on their goods.

A government using protectionist measures hurts trade, domestically and abroad.

But, yes, Walmart sucks.

I just thought of something. If the WTO is for free trade, then why would they put sanctions on ANY country. Also, if they wanted free trade, why dont they just let there be free trade? That way the WTO would no longer exist.

Nope, Euro is up 0.16% on the dollar today (1 euro buys $1.329 down from a high of $1.33 earlier today) and pound sterling is up 0.07% (£1 buys $1.89). Figures at the end of trading for the day. Both to their highest level for some time.
