Just out of curiosity, how many people here are musician's (presently or in the past, please specify) and if so what do you play. I guess I'll start, I am currently going to a universtity to enter the world as a professional muscian. I play Cello, Bass, and I sing. I also play more than a dozen other insturments but not well enough to be worth listing them.

Played the electric guitar. Got bored really. I don't see myself becoming a musician as my job.

I still play once in a while for churches and gigs once in a blue moon.

Well, I'm kinda in a low point of my "career", but I play guitar, bass, and keyboards. I also sing. I'm starting a death metal band, where I play keys. I can't play guitar fast enough...

I play the keyboard; but the problem is I taught myself, and I taught myself bad! In order to play certain chords I have to twist my hands into unatural postions - that hurt after a while. Do you think I should unlearn all I know then learn to play correctly, or should I keep my unique style?

You can retrain it. Theres a few chords I used to play weird on guitar, but I kept practicing the easier way and it became natural. Don't keep a "unique" style if its difficult and hurts your playing.

My main instrument is the drums, but I can play guitar, bass, and saxophone mildly proficiently, and I can play like 2 or 3 songs on piano.

in my time i have had lessons in piano (abandoned early), violin (grade 1!), guitar, and E flat bass (which is like a tuba). I've also got some music o levels but my teacher was pretty confused when my performance was an improvised chicago blues on guitar accompanied by my mate on piano.

i was in a band playing guitar, bass and keyboards for a couple of years. nowadays i strum acoustic guitar occasionally, and help my kids with their recorder and keyboard lessons.

I hesitate to say i'm a musician though because I'm not really any good at any instrument.

Static X? Well, depending on your taste...

And not death metal, but Rammstein. :)

I wouldn't classify Rammstein as. I thought Static X could be, but then i'm not a big metal person despite not minding some of it.

Just gimme my Kyuss and i'm happy :p

Would you consider Meshuggah (sp?) death metal?

Then again, they don't have keyboards.

I am majoring in Violin Performance, can play chopsticks on the piano, and love to sing with other people. I cannot stand metal of any kind. I would love to try the bass. I am thinking about taking a bass class....

Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Lamb of God....

I labelled Opeth in particular "black" metal- going by song names like "Demon of the Fall", and the image that stuck in my head was that Death Metal was faster and more aggressive- Opeth use acoustics...? Though I've heard of all of the others, I haven't really heard much, if any, of their stuff.

(Actually, in hindsight, listening to a couple of Opeth MP3's I have, I can definitely see your point...I just had some of the softer verses in my head. It's been a while. I planned to check out In Flames in particular a while ago, but never got around to it.)

Good luck. Which university? Do you count banjos as musical instruments? When I was in college, I was in a pretty successful band. We weren't a Thursday-Friday-Saturday band, but we could always count on enough Tuesday-Wednesday stuff to pay a few bills. We were all students anyway, so it was just for fun.

Musician ... compose, play, produce, and now teach. It would be easier to tell you what instruments I don't play: double reeds (never did quite get the technique down). Everything else is no problem.

I'm doing music and recording at uni. Play bass in a band - <3 my bass :D . I also play flute (grade 7...grade 8 soon eek), guitar, piano and sax (<--not done grades in those because I prefer to keep them fun). And I compose music and things. And I'm thinking of doing Grade 7 theory...anyone here done that? Is it ridiculously hard? I think I heard the words "Bach Chorale" mentioned in relation to it...

I can play a few songs on the electric Bass. I'm just starting out really. I've got no band aspirations or anything (the entertainment industry is far too close to prostitution in my view), it's just something I do for my own amusement.

You should definitely ditch the "unique" style. =P

It'll make playing so much more enjoyable if you're not in pain, unless you like that kinda thing... =\

But I highly recommend that you learn to play them in a position where it isn't gunna hurt.

Anyway, I can play piano but I quit lessons at grade 7 and I haven't touched the piano since.

Uh

Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Lamb of God....

Opeth and Dimmu Borgir are black metal, the melodic death metal bands (Arch Enemy, In Flames) are sometimes dismissed as pussy bands. Cannibal Corpse, Rotting, Cryptopsy type bands are 'real' death metal.

Lamb of God aren't death metal, they're just how mainstream metal sounds these days, same with The Black Dahlia Murders.

I'm kinda a musician, I sing and write guitars for an emo/grind band and I program some IDM/industrialish sounding stuff.
