I think I just realized that it's Thanksgiving Day in the States...
Why's it happening on a Thursday?

I don't know, does it? It always happens on a Monday, here - about a month ago, now. I wasn't sure, I thought maybe it was tied to a date, like Christmas.

So does that mean everybody's back at work on Friday, or does it mean a four-day weekend? Going in the day after a big Thanksgiving meal would be pretty brutal...

I'm pretty sure it's always the last Thursday of November here. I could remember wrong on that, though.

fourth Thursday. The Friday after that is traditionally a shopping day so sales clerks have to work that day. And of course the every day jobs like law enforcement

Its supposed to be the biggest shopping day of the year. I went shopping last year on the day after Thanksgiving. There was soooo many people in the mall :( and a lot of them would walk in groups and go really slow.

I can't handle malls. Too many people, too many groups, walking too slowly. Then there's the baby strollers big as an austin mini, which also tend to be deployed in caravans. Add the ambience of wailing toddlers and the incessant ringing of vanity-tone cel phones, and voila!
Essence of a place I'd rather not be.
