I'd be glad to know in detail how you celebrate it. I know very little about it, just that it has to do with some victory of the Maccabees and it's about lightning candles...

Yep, that's about it. It's the least important holiday to Jews, the only one with a fixed date (as it's historically based), and since it falls into conjunction with Christmas and pagan winter equinox holidays, it's overhyped to the extent of religious consumerism.
Yay, the downfall of religion at the hands of secular consumerism is close at hand!

Uh huh, you're not Jewish are you? Neither, I would guess, are you Christian. 7th isn't Christmas, 25th is. It isn't the least important holiday, far from it. It doesn't have a fixed date, only by the Jewish calendar. Presents aren't common at Hanukah, other than that, well done!

Yup it's about the impossible.

A few thousand Guerilla Religious People, facing tens of thousands of Well Trained Soldiers.

I was also taught in Torah Class, that is also Woman's day...

why?

Because, before the events leading up the the Maccabee big battles, they were few in numbers.

Anyways the greeks liked to rape the jewish women, so one day, it was some womens turn to be raped. (dont remember her name) Anyways, she made the General drunk, and when he fell asleep, she cut off his head. Once news heard of this.

THe jews exclaimed "If a woman can kill a general, then what is to stop us from conquering the world's most powerfulest army?!" Or so what i remember... it was something like that anyways.

Anyways heres a wiki article on Hanukah.

Oh, how it's celebrated...

Well, we eat good "Jew food", light candles each night for 8 days on a channukiah (way to 'jew' Chanukah, Kwanza), spin dreidles, win gelt (Jews and their money :p), open presents, shout at relatives, sing songs, pray a bit, and hit the Manischewitz till we can open our presents and leave in our family vans and Volvos.

Oh ya, and it's all made from Christian and Muslim blood. MWUAHAHAHAHAHA.

Thanks a lot to all who replied... I'm remembering something about dreidles, now that you're telling me about, what's the meaning for it? (yeah, i knw I'm exaggerating... will try to google it, promise...)

Loved the quote about the woman, however wasn't it about Judith and Holophernes? Or am I getting mixed? (most probably so)

Whoever said that we Jews only give presents on Hanukah because of consumerisim is right. It IS one of the least important Jewish holidays. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, etc. are much more significant in Jewish history. The only reason it is the most widely accepted and known about jewish holiday is because it has become the Jewish Christmas.

I resent your implications, am offended by your ignorance, and find it easy to believe, despite the fact that you are Jewish, that you misread and were confused by my complex and demeaning form of posting.

No shit --- of course it's date is only fixed on the Jewish calender, as some stupid shmucks still refuse to reform to our Christian secular society.

No shit --- Christmas is December 25th, the same day that pagans celebrated the birth of Mithra, the main deity that Jesus's mythology was stolen from.

No shit --- Winter equinox, Kwanzah, Rammadan, Tet, Channukah, Christmas, and a bunch of other holidays that occur in the time of the year when it starts to get cold occur at the same time of year, and ergo, manifest competition in the form of consumerism.

No shit --- gift giving wasn't originally part of Channukah, but Christmas trees and Santa weren't originally part of Christmas; I don't know where you've been, but apparently the effects of Judeo-Christian religious holiday rivalry haven't been apparent there yet. Here in the progressive state of California, that's very clear, though there's been a slight drop in it since 9-11.

No shit --- Channukah isn't that important of a holiday to Jews, except, once again, for religious rivalry. It isn't mentioned in the bible, only in the Talmud, and while the three main Harvest Holidays aren't as well known as Hannukah, they still trump it anyday of our pathetic 12/13 month lunar year!

No you're not, I too think that the story is from the bible, and not from any Channukah event. Maybe someone just got their fairy tales mixed up.

Somone pointed out "good" jewish food.

Matzo is not very good.

Gefilte fish is alright.

Bagels and lox is yahweh's gift to mankind.

I used to use kosher salt until i started getting fleur de sel, so i'm neutral there.

Manischewitz is o/k, tawny and vintage port is alot better, as are many wines.

My two cents

The whole "eight days of light" thing was created by a Babylonian scholar in the 4th century AD to try to keep the hype up. The real "miracle" was the military victory led by the Maccabees (or the Hasmoneans)

Bagels are an all-pervasive argument against anti-Semitism, as are Mel Brooks, Yiddish, and Challah...which I think tastes all right but I have a cat who loves it...

Challah isnt bad at all.

Also, I'm a huge fan of eating anything from the ocean, especially if it has been somehow preserved.

(pickled herring, gefilte, lox, any kind of smoked seafood, even *gasp* lutefisk)

Actually, Ramadan happens ten days earlier every year because Muslims follow the lunar calendar. And I don't think it's customary to give presents on Eid (although a lot of money is exchanged).

the dreidle, or in hebrew sevivon, is important because on his 4 sides he had a letters. that letters is intials for the sentence "big miracle was here", but on countries that aren't Israel the word "here" replaced with "there".
if you asked about the shape, I can't help you, but anyway that isn't important fact about the holiday.

Actually, Eid has more to do with "Help the poor people or Allah will SMITE THEE!"

Islam revolves around alot of helping poor people.

And killing heathens but i wont go there....

Yeah, Islam is basically communism in the name of God. Communislam?

Back to the topic. Um...is there a particular greeting that you lot give each other during Hanukkah? Par exemple, on Eid they say "Eid Mubarak!" and is it common for people to wish each other a "Merry Christmas" when the time comes.

I thought the title of the thread was funny ... "Question for Jewish (people)." Why is people in parenthesis? Did you want to make sure that tthe Jewish Bears knew it wasn't for them? :D

Anyway ...

Hannukah is when we blow out the candles on the menorah and wish Jesus a happy birthday.
