I'm currently trying to break this dirty habit.

Has anyone here been in the same situation or known someone that has? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I have. I quit smoking last august.

How to quit smoking?

Just don't do it. That's all there is to it. Is easy. :)

Good luck!! :)

My dad just quit recently, and he said the trick was to keep in mind that cravings only last for 2-5 minutes (or some such number). That is, it won't just keep getting worse and worse the longer you leave it, and if you can wait out individual cravings, they'll go away.

But keep in mind that the trick isn't to stop smoking, it's to *keep* not smoking... my dad managed to go completely cold turkey for about a week, and then had to go back to smoking once or twice every couple of days.

My mum gave up smoking ages ago, and only ever relapsed when she was really stressed... so finding alternate ways to deal with stress may help, I guess.

And edited to add: Good luck! :D

My Father helped his friends quit smoking. He wanted to help because they would smoke while they were playing cards on Sunday nights and my father wasn't a smoker so it made him uncomfortable. His friends were also co-workers at the factory so he saw them regularly. Every time he saw them lighting up or in the middle of a cigg, he would take £20 off them or add it to a list he'd made. This worked with 2 of them and after they'd officially kicked the habit, he gave them their money back. The third still smokes but promised not to do so at the card games so my father discontinued the money game.

I quit 3 years ago.
Just avoid the worst places, coffee shops, bars etc. Go out only with people who don't smoke for about a month or so. It helps a lot.

The problem is, that few of my friends smoke. And those that do I see rarely since they are at uni in different parts of the country.

But thank you for all the support everyone.

Well that won't help then :)
Keep avoiding them?

Avoid situations where you normally smoke or try to keep yourself busy on those occasions.

I quit for ten years once. The only way I was able to do it was to substitute strenuous exercise for smoking. It worked right up until I was recovering from my near-fatal military parachuting accident. I was in a wheelchair for six months and someone sent me a box of cigars, which I smoked, like an idiot ... hooked all over again. Sigh.

Zeppistan and I are doing it now.. We are on week 3.. I strongly suggest using the patch, it does help a lot with the withdrawl. Good Luck! :)

It's not actually possible. :(

I've tried so many times, yet I always go back to the sweet kiss of nicotine upon my lips.

It's sad.

Of course it's possible, people do it every day.. maybe you can't do it, that doesn't mean it can't be done.

Its not that you suck at quitting smoking, its just you are really great at starting again.

Well, in fairness Zeppistan and I are only on week three.. we don't need to hear it can't be done either! Mind you Zeppistan has quit before for 9 months.. I on the other hand have never, but I'm finding with the patch it's not near as hard as I thought it would be and I've been smoking for over 25 years..

Okay, I'm sorry. And I do wish you the best.

I do know people who have done it, I just get bitter. That's all.

I am currently trying to wean myself off them. I smoked 10 a day (average, provided I didn't go out at night). So I have given my self targets and am only smoking half of them. This seems to be working, but my biggest challenge to completely stop. Really there are only two times a day when I really feel like a fag, When I wake up in the morning and after tea. So, it is a bit hard to avoid those situations.

I'm aiming for Sunday to be my first completely fag free day (for about seven years  ). Only got five left and I have intentionally stopped my money supply so I cannot buy anything.

That was a wild stab in the dark. I knew I heard it on a sitcom, but couldn't remember if it was Scrubs or Green Wing
