Zippy the Pinhead

Does anybody understand Zippy the Pinhead? Whenever I try to read it, I always get confused by how absurd it is. Supposedly thats whats so funny about it, but I never have found it funny once. Just really confusing.

For those of you who don't know Zippy the Pinhead, it's a comic strip consisting of Zippy, a guy who looks like a middle aged clown with a pinhead, talking to inanimate objects or his odd companions. Here's a sample strip:

It's a little absurd, yes, but it's not that difficult a metaphor. The ketchup (no, not catsup) bottle is just there to represent someone who's covering up loneliness with a feeling of self-importance.

It was funny because Zippy said "I was trying to pay you a condiment (Catsup IS a condiment)" instead of compliment. There now aren't your sides spliting now. Try to catch your breath. :)

Honestly, I don't see the appeal other than he uses real places and statues and such. Some people must read it to see if their querky local place is in the strip.

This might help:

Then again, maybe not.
I've been put off Zippy completely by the pretentious wankers who were soooo into him when I was at University and would condescend and snigger at you if you deared to say you couldn't see the humour in him.

Speaking of crap unfunny strips, have a look at these ones:

Cycle thru all of them and try to find one that makes you smile slightly. I couldn't. And I'm including Mark Fiore's one in there. I like his work, but let's face it - they're not made to laugh at.

I saw a documentary with the guy who does this comic in it... he said that his dad always called him a "Pinhead" so that's where he got the inspiration for Zippy... Oh, and the guy was a complete Momma's boy...
