Two hundered years ago, to this very day, there was born a man in New Hampshire. This man was Franklin Peirce, 14 presedent of the United States of America. He was a man with a vision- get territory and keep the union alive. Can you belive it's already been 200 years?
Concidered the most handsome president to ever grace the White House, Franklin Peirce was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshire on November 23, 1804. He was an Episcopalian and a Democrat. He attended Bowdoin College in Maine along with his lifelong friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne, although he partied a bit too much and had grades near the bottom of his class as a sophmore. He became the fourteenth presedent in 1853, and served one term, as his party refused to nominate him for a second. He signed the Kansas-Nebraska act in 1853, which created a small "mini civil war" and the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. Thsi would be one of the most important factors in creating the Republican Party. He also signed the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, which gave the United States a strip of land in modern day Arizona and New Mexico. He was pro-slavery, along with his secretary of war, Jefferson Davis. He was an alcoholic who suffered from depression. His three sons all died in childhood. The last died in a train wreck two months before Pierce’s inauguration while the family was traveling to the funeral of a family friend. His wife was emotionally traumatized by the loss of her sons, and fell into a deep depression from which she never recovered. He died alone and bitter in 1869, only appearing in the public eye after he left office to critize Linclon and declare the foolishness of abolishing slavery.
For the better of for the worse, this man attained the highest office in the United States. Even for all of his triviality, he set the stage for the civil war, the Republican party, and signed two important bills. He was the only the only president from New Hampshire and the only president to affirm the oath of office rather than swear it. Now that you've learned about this man for all time, let's all celebrate two hundred years of Handsome Frank!
