Why just WWII? Why not just make a forum about war? That way all of us hippies can write about how wrong war is and how everyone should turn the other cheek. ~Kayla

Well, I was thinking about how we could have it on here. Yet, I am serious when I say I want everyone to have an intelligent discussion. This means no spammers.

So anyone in?

You should listen to your inner child. Violence is wrong. Violence only begots more violence. It is a vicious cycle that shall only end when all war mongers learn the error of their ways.

Thats not going to happen. We live in a world of war and violence. This isn't happy happy land.

We must come to peace one person at a time. It might take my whole life but violence in the world shall decrease.

We should have a general history forum.

I agree with Sean O Mac. We should speak of our history so that we shall learn of the mistakes our forefathers have made. So that we shall not be destined to follow in the footsteps of those who have made errors.

Russo-Japanses War

Napoleonic Wars

Wars of German Unification

Spanish Civil War

First Punic War

Second Punic War

Third Punic War

The Crusades

Hundred Year's War

Thirty Years War

... my point is, you HAVE to limit it to a specific one to get into any kind of detail, or else it would become unweildly.

Okay, I think I get everyone's point. lol.

If we are going to have a general history forum then what should be its categories?

I like the idea. But a general history forum would be just too broad. Plus people would want to talk about current events (or at least inteject them) on the grounds that they are relevant to history or something.

I think any such undertaking should be divided into historical periods, i.e., ancient, medieval, modern etc. And there should be a cut off date - possibly around 1975 - after which things should not be brought up.
Stoutsbury
23-11-2004, 21:59
Alright, this is what I am thinkning....

1700's

1800's

1900-45

1946-2000

Current Events

Those are the categories that I will use. I believe politics in itself didn't start until the 1700's. Yet, if a lot of people seem interested in things that happened before 1700 then I might make a change. Anyways, who is still interested?
DeaconDave
23-11-2004, 22:01
Yes, but I would make it 1946 - 1975.

Then current events, so discussions about vietnam don't get spammed up with Bushsux and the war in iraq.

23-11-2004, 22:06
Trust me they won't. I'll make that clear in the Rules.
DeaconDave
23-11-2004, 22:10
Ok, sounds good.

My other thought is that 1700 - 1800 is a little artifical. It sort of straddles several things like US independance and the industrial revolution. Maybe you should allow some flexibilty (within reason) for the earlier periods.

What is the point in having a general historical discussion without being able to argue about how this relates to here and now? The whole point of history is what it teaches us.

There doesn't have to be a point, some people just enjoy history for the sake of it. The problem is there are some others who view any topic involving recent history as an opportunity to start campaigning for either the democrats or the republicans and that is just disruptive.

Perhaps. But everyone forgot about it, so can hardly have been that riveting. Much like sumo wrestling I imagine.

No problem to answer your questions or give help, but why a forum? When you "search" my name, you'll see that I debate it often but i think that the levell on NS is to low to have a serious, specialised topic about it. Most posters are verry young and verry uninformed or biased.
It is not a WWII forum here, if you wan't I can give you some links to serious fora. Wether you prefer specific ones with a US approach, European ones with a EU aproach or world wide ones in wich every one posts,no problem, glad to send you them.

There is a thriving forum on different periods of military history here:

http://www.war-forums.com/forums/

The Armchair General Section is for history buffs

The Warfare HQ section is for wargamers.

Lots of Europeans on the board.
