My ROTC instructor was talking about a bill pased by the Russian Senate (real name starts with a 'D' but I forget) passed a bill giving a lot of powers to Putin, resembling a dictator this past couple days. Could anyone give me information on this or am I hearing things from people? :O

Putin is just playing catch-up with Shrub...didn't you hear about Russia's new plan for smart nukes to keep up with your missile defence initiative?

Amazing how even though there's no cold war to fight anymore, all we hear are old ideas best shelved fifty years ago.

Never trust an Elf!

Hahaha!

Wasn't there some kind of bill past like 3 days ago handing over a lot of the Duma's power to Putin though?

Putin has actually had considerable power for a while now. He controls the police,(built into which is a Secret Police system, although unoficial.) and no one can REALLY stop him.

He does what he wants. Look at all the companies he has taken over, and remember that other oil baron who started dabling in politics? Now, this guy was by no means a saint, but did pose a threat. Him a Putin had a deal. You stay out of politics, I don't send the cops to find out how you got so rich.

Guy started drummin up support, got busted for tax evations, goverment now owns his company and he's in prison.

Putin has had that much power for a long time, hes just making it official now.

Putin is amongst a group who shift their loyalties with power. He follows power like a bloodhound. During the days of the USSR Putin was KGB, and now that the USSR and KGB are defunct, Putin is President of the Russian Federation, the new center of power in Russia.

true.

I also have a feeling he will no longer be the one following the power for a long time now though, now that he has cemented himself at the top of the tower.

After the attack on that school on russia putin went on TV and told russia that because of terrorism, they would have to sacrafice many of their democratic rights.

He went on TV and said that from now on:
He would appoint regional governors, they would not be elected.
and Legislators would no longer be chosen by direct election, but rather chosen by the party.

Over the past few years he's been closing down the media and taking it over, and putting the wealthy elites who are not on his side in jail (see: M. Khordokovsky).

The dumas just rubber-stamped what he went on TV an proclaimed as law.

He is the dictator now.

Remember though, before 9/11 george bush met with puting and "looked into his soul" to see that "he was a good man."

Interesting thing about putin was he wasn't actually even elected when he was first put into power, Yeltsin appointed him. He had to run get elected a few months later but in russia elections aren't exactly fair for the challegners, something to do with the near total control of the media by the state.

Weird parallels to US elections, then.

I agree somewhat. He was appointed by Yeltsin to be his sucessor as
puppet of the rich corrupt oligarchs which stole most of the prodcutive sectors of the economy in the collapse of the USSR but turned against the with a vengence. Most of the richest oligarchs were jews anyway that nobody really liked, such as Khodorkovsky the guy who tried to sell a large stake in his oil company to the Americans (big mistake).

I have read here and there that Putin in private says that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a disaster. It seems as if he is hard at work bringing back some resemblance of the USSR with a more capitalistic economy but a totalitarian state controling the activities of the major sectors of the economy. Sort of like China.

Putin described as “absolute rubbish” the statements of some critics, who maintain that Russia is on the way to an authoritarian regime. “Of course, any steps aimed at improving the efficiency of the functioning of the state put people on their guard. This is understandable. We have a saying: the one who burned his tongue with hot milk, will blow at cold water,” Putin said.

Putin disagrees with you. (what a surprise)
Anyway Itar-Tass is IMO the best source to check what's going on in Russia.

I just said that.

wait, sorry, no I didn't.

Yes, Russia has been going back to dictatorship for a while.

The question is, is it he dawning of a new era, or an era we've had before?
