This is why the Republicans will never nominate McCain in 2008.

Why? Because he refuses to tow the party line? Or because you think he is actually incorrect?

First one.

Democrats LIKE him. If he ran he would be unbeatable. But no, he doesn't fall in line. He's not conservative enough. He couldn't beat Bush in 2000, he won't have a chance against Frist (most likely) in 2008. He voted against Bush's Gay Marriage Amendment. He has gone against the GOP just as much as he has stayed with them. He's viewed as a traitor by conservatives and doesn't stand a chance of passing the conservative test for the GOP nomination.

As well, the Republicans have smeared him enough. I was living in South Carolina during the 2000 GOP primaries...when thousands of people were called up and informed that McCain had an illegitimate black baby. They also suggested his wife was a drug addict and that McCain himself was mentally unstable from his years as a POW in Vietnam.

When Bush beat McCain in the primaries my father, a moderate Republican, said "they picked the wrong guy".

McCain has no more chance of getting the GOP nomination than Zell Miller or Joseph "Ban violent video games!" Lieberman have of getting the Democrat nomination (Republicans like both candidates, incidentally).

Hm...I was aware of the info, but I guess I needed to hear it. Thanks for the info and perspective.

I wish they would. He would win by a land-slide. A Republican could win without a strong backing from the Christian Coalition.

Edit was done because I am tired and have not had a good few days. I put "Conservative Coalition" instead of "Christian Coalition."

It's quite possible. But the hard part is beating the competition from his own party.

I do not think that is possible. I can hope, but I know it cannot be done. :(

For 18 months, war supporters have told me that comparing Iraq to Vietnam is an unjustifiable exaggeration because the casualties so far have been lighter. However, that is because we don't have as many troops in Iraq as we had during Vietnam during its peak (which was well after 1964). Before it escalated, Vietnam could have easily been called 'a minor foreign intervention' as opposed to a full-blown war.

I fear that McCain's statements are the first hint that the Iraq conflict is about to escalate, similar to the escalation of Vietnam in '64-65. As such, it will get much, much worse. :(

I'd vote for him. It would be the first vote I actually participated in where I wouldn't feel dirty afterwards.
