You might be surprised to find out what she thinks of it. She's in support of file sharing. She actually sells more records because of it, if you can believe it. She's an artist and one hell of a smart lady.

I've bought more CD's and discovered more bands thanks to file sharing. I don't see why the record companies are so pissed, because there are tons of people just like me who use file sharing and end up buying the band's CD.

That's the point she's trying to make. Her record sales go up when she offers free MP3s on her site, and she knows a lot of people who say the same. It's actually good for the artists, because it might save them getting screwed by the record companies. And believe me, Janis Ian knows all about getting screwed by the label.

Anyway, there's a band called Wilco that was turned down for a contract, and they offered their stuff up to the P2P gods, and hey, what do you know? The record companies had to give them a contract, or they'd have made themselves a success without the label.

The only bad guys here are the labels. They manipulate and monopolize, and that's why P2P scares the hell out of them.
