(Mika Kano) hopes to go all the way to the top of the charts with her song "Osusowake - Purupurun no kyu no bon," a song whose title translates very, very roughly into English as "Wobbly Tits, Tiny Waist and Bouncy Hips, Let's Share Them All Around." ... "During the chorus, she wildly wobbles her huge 98-centimeter jugs up, down and round-and-round and repeatedly grinds her hips with a raunchiness that is almost embarrassing," a TV beat reporter tells Shukan Taishu. "It's going to be used as the opening theme for (a childrens television) show from next month, but you've got to wonder with all the sexiness in it, will it really be suitable for the children?"

This is Mika:

While here in the US, people are up in arms because a sexy (to some) white woman propositions a black football player and drops her towel before the start of a football game--in a commercial.

Accoding to this Time Asia article (http://www.time.com/time/asia/arts/magazine/0,9754,178478,00.html) she wears a G cup.

Mika has her G-cup bras custom-made

Going by this sizing chart (http://www.inchant.com/Bra/SizeCharts.html), it's possible. Howeve, Japanese media often over-inflates popular celebs' cup sizes. (Yes, the media here publish the vital stats for most female celebs.)

Prostitution is legal, by US standards. The legal status is complicated, but essentially pimping, brothels, and soliciting are illegal, but not the actual act of prostitution. Furthermore, only genital-genital penetration is illegal. Any other sex act is legal (and openly available).

Pornography is also legal, though censored - actuall sex acts must be masked or blacked out. However, there is a large underground pornography maeket (I've read that up to 50% of Japanese pornographic videos are black market uncensored videos.)

But there is still a lot sexual repression here. Japan is a largely Confucian country, particularly in relation to gender roles and sex.

Here's a good sexology site on Japan:

Confucian countries (China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Singapore, for example) tend to be sexually open and repressive at the same time.

And all sorts of fetishes abound here, as anywhere. But fetishes certainly seems to be more common here, especially lolita and "bishoujo" fetishes.

The whole gothic lolita (http://www.morbidoutlook.com/fashion/articles/2002_07_gothiclolita.html) sub-culture is also interesting to look at. It's a good example of young women sometimes desexualize themselves.

bishoujo = pretty boy. Very, very pretty. Ungodly pretty. Looks like a chick pretty :p. See: multiple jpop stars :p

It's the whole lolita thing - they subcomciously deny their adulthood, and thus their sexuality, by trying to look (and act) youngeer than they are.

Lolita come from the name of a character in a novel by the same title, written by Vladimir Nabokov. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolita
A lolita fetish is a fetish for young adolesent girls. It's very common in japan, and is known as a lolita Complex or "loloicon"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolicon

Yes, but a lolita fetish is different.

bishoujo = pretty boy. Very, very pretty. Ungodly pretty. Looks like a chick pretty . See: multiple jpop stars

Nope.

美 (Bi) = beautiful
少 (Sho) = young
女 (Jo) = woman/girl

So Bishoujo means "beautiful young woman/girl".
Bishoujo is also a genre of video game and animation in Japan, which feature idealized young girls, sometimes in sexual ways. It's also a genre of pornography (featuring late teen girls). It's also notable that Japan only made child pornography illegal in the mid to late '90s.

I was so totally thinking of bishounen ^_^;;;

(^_-) And the whole bishounen thing is also indicative of sexual repression and unhealthyness, both male and female.

The whole shounen-ai and yaoi genre* of manga and anime popular among Japanese girls and young women in part because it presents "non-threatening" males. "The Function of Woman-Authored Manga in Japanese Society" (http://www.animeresearch.com/Articles/WomenInManga/) by Brian Ruh has some good insights on this.
(Found that at http://www.animeresearch.com/resources.html. There's more good scholarly work on anime to be found there.)

On the male side, cultural homosexuality is a very, very old tradition. Samurai and Buddhist monks often took gay lovers, and this continues today - Yukio Mishima being a famous example.

Then there's the whole gender-bending theater. Kabuki, all male, has the onnagata, and all female theater like the Takarazuka Revue otokoyaku (males who play females and vice-versa).

*These homosexual love stories and "slash" type stories featuring "bishounen", or young, androugenous men. The main target audience is schoolgirls, young women, and housewives.

変体 へんたい (n) abnormality
変態 へんたい (n) transformation; metamorphosis; abnormality; pervert; (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/jwb/wwwjdic?1E)

It generally means pervert, perverted, or perversion, depending on the exact context. Thus the English loan word refering to the genre of anime.

A) Rudeness is simply rude.
B) The only Japanese TV shows I watch with any regularity anymore are NHK news, Igo-shogi chanel, pro-wrestiling, and Yoru-bijo TV*.
C)

Who said there was a problem with it? I thought it was funny.

D) It's not even on air yet.

*Yoru-Bijo TV is one of the few remaining late night sukebe** TV show featuring semi-nude models, porn video revues, ads for love hotels, and frank discussions of a sexual nature.
