You know, I really don't understand this kind of thing. I don't understand the logic behind thinking that just because a fish, or any other kind of animal, is a living thing means it shouldn't be eaten. It can feel pain, so it must be spared.

What the hell? Is it somehow now unnatural for living things to eat other living things? At what point did humanity stop being an omniverous species?

So, if you understand this logic: please, explain it to me.

There is also no evidence that plants do not feel pain. It's kinda hard to get a tree to admit when it has a bug infestation, after all.

(btw, I don't like animal cruelty as much as anyone else, but really, human rights first)

It's true that animals eat each other, what most are vegetarian (diet protesting) about is how the animals that do get eaten are treated.

"You know what, when I eat meat, it's dead. That apple you're eating, you're eating it ALIVE." ;)

But seriously, we're an omnivorous species, we eat by opportunity. That's why we've got a whole bunch of different kinds of teeth.

PETA is mean, that's all I can say.

For once, I'd like to see those animal rights nutbars try to tell other carnivorous/omnivorous animals to stop eating meat and go on a strict vegan diet. Bet it'd go over real well with lions...

Yes. Meat. But everything in moderation. A delicious salad ALONGSIDE a steaming, breaded lamb's chop. With a glass of wine. And a light run in a couple hours. Because you appreciate food about 10x more when hungry.

I propose a solution to all of this animal grab-assedry:

We should all eat the vegetarians. That way some of the animal populations can regain their numbers (maybe) while we're decreasing the population of nagging jackasses who nerd all over the place. We're creating more delicious animals for us to eat, while getting rid of a world-wide problem. It's win freakin' win!

Eating meat is wrong.

I am a 3rd level vegan, and I believe it is wrong to eat anything that casts a shadow.

NOTE: I am kidding. ha!

But seriously, food is fantastic. But If a person derives more satisfaction out of eating a certain type (or lack of) food, then more power to them, and I applaud your crazy choices in life. Just don’t tell me what to do ok.

That sounds like a good plan, breaded lamb's chop is a good choice I might add.

We all have so many choices to contend with daily.

Not one of us could possibly agree on all subjects. Eating is a very personal topic for most people. Personally I enjoy eating a variety of foods, which sometime includes cow, pig or chicken or fish. Whatever this planets has to offer is for use; the trick is to not overuse it.

Which is just as ridiculous, some carnivores and/or parasites consume their prey while it is still alive. Now how does that compare to having to sit in a cage that is a little to small?

Having gone fishing before, I can see very little intellegence when it comes to fish. They try to survive, get food, etc but not much more, unlike certain mammals that can actually display intellegence.

well, can someone explain to me what exactly IS the difference between a fish or a chicken and your pet dog/rabbit/cat? why is it alright to eat a chicken, yet so many people would be horrified at the thought of eating a dog or a horse?

While it is true that there are many tasty vegetable dishes out there (anyone who doubts this should proceed directly to an Indian restaurant) I like and will continue to eat meat.

Lamb chops broiled on a grill with some spinach, a mixed greens salad with orange slices and shrimps = delicious.

Roast turkey with asparagus and sweet potatoes = outrageous.

A good medium filet mignon smothered with mushrooms and a glass of red wine= heavenly.

My traditional Christmas eve dinner of seven fishes = AWESOME.
;) We even recycle -- we have a lobster apiece... most people in my family just eat the claws and tail. The bodies and legs and shells then go to make lobster bisque for Christmas dinner. Yum!

Ok, I'll take a stab at it. Dog can actually be taught tricks, to be called by name, to show affection towards you, etc where as a fish can't. Humans
eat eggs from a chicken but a majority have never eaten a baby horse or a puppy, in the western world anyway. It's like with cows, that if they provide one source of food for us, well look at other possibilities of getting food from them. I would have an attachment to my dog, cat or horse but not to a fish, they are very different. Also, ever heard of a seeing eye dog?

Westerners have uses for dog's and horses. They are much more valuable alive than as food.

Meanwhile, try to go hunting with a fish, or ride a chicken.

There is none. Dog is eaten throughout Asia, and horse pretty much everywhere, though it's not popular in America. (You can still get it, though).

I eat rabbit -- it's very good.

The difference between your PET and what's on your dinner plate is a matter of personal preference and choice. There are many people living on farms who have raised a livestock animal to keep as a pet, and yet have no problem eating its siblings or offspring.

A dog, horse, or cat provides for a need (transportation, hunting aid, home defense, pest disposal) beyond food.
Further, there is a certain beauty and grace in a cat or a dog (especially when chasing or stalking) that a chicken will never possess. This also makes them more acceptable as a pet, as opposed to a chicken or cow which crap all over the place, are ugly as hell, have all the intelligence of a <insert name of political candidate that you personally dislike here> voter, and smell horrible.
However, as far as rabbits go, I really have no idea why someone would want one of those anywhere near there house.

I think I might be the only vegan in this thread...heh...

But anyway. I never try to push my beliefs on others, if someone wants to eat meat thats fine. I just choose not to.

When I was 7 I saw my grandfather kill a chicken, and after that I refused to eat it anymore. Soon after I stopped eating meat all together (that includes fish) and stopped consuming dairy products as well. I'm happy with my decision to stop eating meat, and I suppose I look at all animals as "nonfood", fish or not. When it comes right down to it though, I NEVER liked eating meat. I always thought it was disgusting, even when I was younger.

But to each his own.....

When people think of chicken, they see a mental picture of a few hundred of em hanging around a farm yard.
When they think of cows, the see bunches of em in a meadow.
When they think of dogs/cats they see their cute pet...No clue whats wrong with eating horse though, theyre delicious.

What do they call those that don't eat meat, or vegies, they only eat fruits that have fallen from the trees? Because that way, the fruit has already suicided itself and would not have felt any pain, so it's OK to eat it.

I heard the term from FRIENDS. I can't remember.

Well, I think you and I would get along fine IRL. In my office, there are a lot of vegetarians and vegans; fortunately neither they nor the more omnivorous of us go out of our way to preach about food... and for the holidays I make a wicked mushroom/onion pie for the "Winter Holiday All-Day Graze" ;) I do make sure, though, that people are aware it contains milk products in case they are strict vegans.

(Let me know if you'd be interested in the recipe, Aerou -- it's dead simple to make.)

Mushroom Puffs/ Mushroom Pie

This recipe can be made in three ways – as puff pastry (the most time consuming), in pre-made fillo dough cups (easiest to handle for hors d’oeuvres at a party), or my favorite, in a frozen pie shell. For the pie, get a deep-dish pie shell and double the recipe for the filling.

Filling (for pie, double)
1/2 pound mushrooms, minced
1 minced large onion
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon thyme
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup sour cream

Pastry (optional)
9 ounces cream cheese
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cup flour

Mix and chill overnight.
Or – use pre-made Fillo Dough Cups

Sauté mushrooms and onions until soft. Add the spices and flour and sauté for another two minutes. Add the sour cream and cool slightly.

Puff Pastry -- Optional : Roll out the pastry and cut into 2 inch circles. Place a small amount of mushroom filling on each circle. Fold and crimp the edges together. Place on a baking sheet and brush the puffs with beaten egg. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Mushroom Pie:
Eliminate the pastry step. Buy a deep dish frozen pie shell, double the recipe for the filling, fill and bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until shell is golden brown. (The filling doesn’t expand when heated, so fill it right to the top.) I like to make it a two-shell pie by thawing a second frozen pie shell, trimming it and crimping it over the top of the filling, and cutting vents in the top shell. Then I brush it with beaten egg before baking, which adds a nice, shiny glazed finish to the top crust. You might have to cover the edges of the shell with aluminum foil to keep them from becoming too dark – so keep an eye on it!

It's not the personal preference that I don't understand. You've made a choice, good for you. I'm happy that you're capable of making such decisions.

What gets under my skin is the way some people trumpet their choice, wave it like a banner that makes them better than me. Self-righteous back-patting wins few people over.
