MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A cafeteria food fight on "meat loaf day" led to the suspension of the entire eighth-grade class at a Memphis school. The students were suspended after refusing to clean up the mess they caused.

The cause of the disturbance was not immediately known. No serious injuries were reported.

Just don't let them go until they clean up. Simple.

Until, of course, their parents won't cooperate and won't give their permission for them to be kept back after school.

cool!

Very uncool. The little SOBs didn't hardly get what they deserved.

I'm with Chess (to my dismay...)

Let them go to school in their own damned mess if they won't clean it up0.

However, as a teacher myself, I must say there's something we aren't hearing about this. Breakdowns in discipline like this don't usually happen in a vacuum...

LOL They probly were told they would be suspended if they didn`t clean up soooo umm well technachly they are getting a vacation cause the whole class is out. Look at it from there POV would you clean up if you knew the whole class including your friends and all would be suspended? I wouldn`t lol.

Perhaps the school shouldn't serve meat loaf to kids.

We never had food fights because our cafeteria guy would kill us with the AK-47 he keeps under the counter.

The kids should go on strike and stay home an extra week just to spite the administration.

Wow, that's spam. It's off topic.

I would wager you did it to boost your post count.

My suggestions for punishing the little miscreants:

1) Force them to clean the mess. With the cafeteria workers supervising their every move. "I want this cafeteria spotless, do you understand!"
2) Keep the entire class for detention. Make them write "I will clean up after myself" 1,000 times.
3) Take them all to a general assembly and have each and every one of the little rugrats marched up to the stage and have their names read off individually and have them all made an example of to the entire school.
4) Take away priviledges they may have earned.
5) Make all the kids run five laps around the school.

Of course, if I had a kid who was suspended for that, I'd make him clean the entire house while I was gone and I'd inspect every little nook and cranny. I would also make sure to leave an enormous mess when I cooked so he'd have to clean everything.

If the kids won't cooperate make the parents pay a fine or something.

Hmmm... maybe the teacher won a prize to go to the Bahamas, non-refundable or changable.

you have got to see this from a kids point of view its just funny and why should anybody care.
schools are corrupt institutions that exist to expeiment on kids minds. They only want to see what happens to the kids behavior if they ban this or limit that.
and if anyone trys to protest they are silenced.

oh and also breakdowns in dicipline do happen in a vacuum and it's usually for the sheer hell of it.

you clearly don't understand children so I think you should find a new job.

yet no teachers understand what they are dealing with so carry on even though you are quite probably useless as is anybody who goes into education.

Little shits.

I second this notion.

Luckily this will leave a mark on their school records. Now, if they mess up more frequently, this can hamper their chances to get a stipendiate for college. I like to think that,

Dear Calum,
I would be overjoyed to see your references (such as children you have raised yourself) regarding your advaned knowledge of pedagogic measures, your understanding of the public school system and finally: proper capitalization.

Sincerely,
Some German guy.

Admitedly, I loved the scene from animal house where the cafeteria breaks out in a food fight, and a food fight is always a great way to blow off some steam. But it's just good manners to clean up your own messes. Mind you, were talking about eigth graders here and eigth graders are generally the most evil children on earth. However, if the kids wont clean up the mess then make the parents come in and clean it up (like that's possible) or fine the parents for their childrens behaviour and see how many of the little hosers are able sit in their chairs without flinching the next day.

BTW (Callum) those who can't think preach. :sniper:

Had to say it. Couldn't pass up such an easy gimme, even though I'll admit I do a lot of blathering that borders on preaching myself.

I spent a few weeks visiting Japanese schools (I'm a teacher). In Japan they have no custodial staff. At the end of the day all the kids in the school sweep, mop, empty trash, wash blackboards, and clean the entire school. It takes about 20 minutes.

Makes a food fight kind of pointless when you know students are doing the cleaning.

Food fights are all in good fun, but you should clean up afterward.
Now, riots on the other hand, those you don't have to clean up, if only because of the concussion you probably recieved in the process.

In my school, "suspension" does not mean a week long vacation.

Suspension means that the offenders sit in a room. They are not allowed to leave the room except to go to the toilet. Lunch is brought in to them, if they have not brought in their own.

Their teachers are required to provide them with the same educational materials as if they had been in class, which is given to them by the In-House Suspension Coordinator. However, since it is not possible for them to be taught, they are given the material to read and, of course, writing exercises to check that they understand the material. They are also given homework, just as if they were in class. If they do not hand in the completed work to their regular teacher upon their return, it is counted against their average as missing essays, tests, whatever it is they were supposed to have accomplished.

In other words, their right to an education is not infringed; however, being stuck in a room and not being able to leave, speak to each other, etc. while still having to do the work (and, really, synthesize it on one's own) is deadly boring.
