I was going to try to come up with some witty way to introduce this, but never mind. Just read it. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58538-2004Nov17.html)

Officials at Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International airports said they are considering the replacement of federal airport screeners at security checkpoints with workers employed by private contractors.

The Transportation Security Administration this week invited airports to apply to leave the federal security screener system and return to private screeners. The government took over airport screening after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and is planning a transition for approved airports by spring or summer 2005.

Now, as the above quote notes, the federal government took over security screening at airports after the 9/11 hijackings, mainly because it was painfully obvious that the private companies that had been doing the job before hadn't done it particularly well. But hey, why should that stop us from trying it again?

Any confidence I had regained about flying will be shot completely to hell if this actually goes through.

Any signs of the September 11 safety hysteria fading are good.

Sorry, but I don't consider basic aircraft travel screening to be hysteria.

it's not. I think he meant that going crazy without assesing the situation and figuring out what is the most effective plan of action is considered hysteria.
